They will be the fourth weapon system to finish testing and also the very first training platform to go through testing. Though the alternative fuel, SJ-8, is derived from coal and natural gas and has the same properties as the current fuel, JP-8, it lacks some of the byproducts that JP-8 has, mainly sulfur. It also comes with added bonuses. "We're reducing our dependency on a foreign source of oil," Meyer said. "Now we can execute our mission without having to worry about foreign suppliers controlling our ability to 'Fly, Fight and Win.'" Not to mention that mix of synthetic and traditional fuel reduces the Air Force's fuel costs by about 25 percent. In order to certify that the fuel is good enough to use in the T-38, members of the Sustainment Program began last summer by sampling materials which are similar to those found in the T-38 engine and anywhere else fuel might be found, Young said. They then mixed the samples with the fuel, which is a 50-50 mixture of SJ-8 and JP-8, and monitored how the samples were affected. The sampling took about two to three months, and afterward the team was able to move forward with ground runs, where they ran tests on installed and uninstalled engines. While testing the fuel, the team kept an eye out for any anomalies in the LUNCH From page 9 Werner said. "We needed to make sure we didn't degrade the safety of the aircraft at all," Young added. This also took about two to three months to complete, and then the team was able to monitor the fuel while the aircraft was in flight. Although there are 538 T-38s located worldwide, the only two T-38s located at Hill are at the museum and at the Air Battle Damage Repair Site. Without having a stock of T-38s to pick and choose from, testing becomes a bit more difficult for the engineers. The process wouldn't be complete without full data analysis and reports, which is what the team is working to finish now. "It's a pretty systematic approach to certifying the fuels," Addison said. All of the team's work was done in cooperation with the Alternative Fuel Certification Office, or AFCO, located at WrightPatterson AFB. "The hard part's done," Addison said. "We've proven to our test flights that we can fly with minimal changes in the aircraft." As for the next step, the T-38 Sustainment Program team will wait for other aircraft, including the F-16 Fighting Falcon, A-10 Thunderbolt, and the F-22 Raptor, plus weapons and supports systems, to complete their certification and for AFCO to locate a domestic supplier by 2016. "We're just contributing our share of the overall Air Force fight to reduce our fuel costs, energy costs and increase our ability to 'Fly, Fight and Win,'" Meyer said.
