I've been waiting for the right project for him to shine in, outside of those lame frat comedies like "Waiting" (gross) or "Van Wilder" (super-gross) that he's wallowed in. In "Definitely, Maybe," he steps into the more sophisticated role of a New York City ad man, Will Hayes, with a precocious daughter, Maya (Abigail Breslin), who has just been through a sex-ed class at school. As a stunned Maya says when Dad picks her up from school, "We have to talk." Their discussion leads to some pointed questions about how Will met Maya's mother. Will de- cides to tell her the story, but changes the names to see if Maya can figure out which woman from his previous relationships is her mother. So he begins his story 15 years earlier, in 1992, when he was a fresh-faced Wisconsin kid right out of college who moves to New York to work for the Bill Clinton presidential campaign. He has left behind his girlfriend, Emily (Elizabeth Banks), but is determined to reconnect with her in a few months as part See REVIEW I page 11 Universal Pictures Ryan Reynolds (right) is Will Hayes, a New York ad man who explains the story of her origins to his daughter, Maya (Abigail Breslin). |
