Are there any penalties for retiring early? A. Generally speaking, there may be reductions in retirement benefits when an employee retires early. Because each employee's situation is different, it's best to review CSRS and FERS retirement information on the Air Force Personnel Center Web site https://wwa. afpc.randolph.af.mil/afpcsecur e/default.asp to determine individual impact. Q. How do I apply for VERA/VSIP? A. Interested employees must apply for VERA/VSIP through Hill's VERA/VSIP Interactive Program Web site, https://hillnet.hill.af.mil/hafb/alc/ dp/civpers/veravsip. The window of opportunity to apply will be March 13 to March 30. Any employees who are looking at this option should first direct their questions to their organization resource adviser or personnel liaison. Q. What is a competitive level? A. Competitive levels are groups of similar positions in the same grade and classification series and similar enough in duties, qualification requirements, pay schedules and working conditions that the incumbent of one position can successfully perform the critical elements of any other position in that same competitive level without any loss of productivity beyond that normally expected in the orientation of a new, but fully qualified, employee. Q. How do I obtain copies of my Standard Form-50s for retirement calculation purposes? A. SF-50s can be accessed through the electronic Official Personnel Folder tool located on the AFPC Web site (https://wwa. afpc.randolph.af.mil/afpcsecure/default.asp). Q. If I receive a VERA/VSIP offer, how long will I have to accept or decline? A. Applicants will have three business days, beginning the day of the offer, to either accept or decline. Therefore, it is important to utilize the retirement calculation tools available so you are prepared to make important decisions regarding your VERA/VSIP offer. Q. If I receive a VSIP, do I have to receive the incentive in a lump sum payment? A. Yes. Depending on funding and time constraints associated with each VSIP, management may limit the payment options available to employees. For this VSIP, employees can elect to receive their VSIP in a lump sum payment. Q. How will I know if my VERA/ VSIP application has been received? A. Once you have submitted your VERA/VSIP application through the VERA/VSIP Web site (https://hillnet. hill.af.mil/hafb/alc/dp/civpers/veravsip/), an e-mail with directions on how to confirm your e-mail address and calculate retirement estimates, will be sent to the e-mail address provided on your application. If you do not receive an e-mail within an hour of applying, please send a valid e-mail address to OOALC.DP.VERAVSIP@Hill.af.mil. Air Force Assistance Fund kicks off campaign with basketball game A t noon today, Hill Air Force base will its 2008 Air Force Assistance Fund (AFAF) Gam- --•' paign with a March Madness basketball match between the officers and enlisted personnel. In addition to the game, former NBA Utah Jazz player Thurl Bailey will sing the national anthem, Miss Utah Teen USA, Kate Feinstein, will award door prizes, and the University of Utah Criifteon line Dance Team will perform at halftime. The event is bpifen to all base persctee: and is a great way to kick off the campaign that will run through May 2. One of two major fundraising events the base sponsors each year, the AFAF funds directly support the Air Force "family." Last year, the campaign was extremely successful and raised more than $109,000. Even with Sie successful fundraising, Hill AFB airmen required or re- • ftSived more than $299,000 in emergency financial aid, educational grants and community programs sponsored by the Airman and Family Readiness Center. The fundraising goal this year is $73,527 with a 50 percent military participation rate. t( Even if you contribute as little as one dollar, you can make a difference in the Air Force community," said Capt. Julie Lacouture, this year's installation project officer. Now in its 35th year, 100 percent of designated AFAF contributions will benefit active duty, Reserve, Guard, retired Air Force personnel, and surviving spouses and families. The AFAF is an umbrella campaign that supports four different Air Force charities. Included among these charities is the Air Force Aide Society, which provides airmen and their families with world-wide emergency financial assistance, education assistance and an array of base level community enhancement programs. Base Airmen and Family Readiness Centers have full details on programs and eligibility requirements. Information is also available online at www. afas.org.
