COMMENTARY You are a leader whether you like it or not BY MAJ. JEFFREY RUSSEL 649 Munitions Squadron commander Y ou are a leader. Whether you want to be or not — whether you like it or not — you are a leader. Regardless of rank or experience, every individual impacts the organization for good or for bad. Some are good leaders. When there is work to be done, the first airman out of the break room leads, even if that airman is the lowest ranking in the organization. Likewise, the person who drags Russel their feet or complains when work needs to be done is also a leader — however, that person leads the organization in the wrong direction. Every day, each and every one of us is faced with a multitude of choices. Every day each and every one of us is faced with a multitude of choices. Our choices influence the people around us. Our choices influence the people around us. Who we decide to support, how we voice a policy, even something as simple as deciding to be cheerful or grumpy — these choices all affect those around us more than we care to admit. Do you volunteer? Do you ensure your uniform is sharp? Do you take the time to ensure the job is done right the first time? Do you stand proud during retreat? If so, you make a difference — a positive difference. Do you do just enough to get by? Do you accept complacency? Do you spread rumors and complain about solvable problems? If so, you make a difference in your unit. If you look the other way when you have the opportunity to act, you create an atmosphere of accepting substandard behavior. If so, you are a leader — unfortunately, your contributions detract from the unit, and possibly put people's lives in jeopardy. So ... you are a leader. Choose how you are going to lead. It is not hard to see the better choice, but it can be difficult to walk the better path. Don't be afraid to make mistakes. If you are making mistakes, then at least you are showing initiative and are trying to improve the unit. Remember, a single person doing the right thing can make a difference. That person is a true leader. Every airman is a leader. What kind of leader are you? 777-7000 action.line.pa@hill.af.mil When you call or send an e-mail, your comments will be recorded and staffed through the agency responsible for action.
