Show Hflion 8 TIMES HILLTOP TIMES June 14, 2007 FLAG continued from page 1 or in the public lobbies of major military installations as designated by the Secretary of Defense, all Federal national cemeteries, the national Korean War Veterans Memorial, the National Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the White House, the United States Postal Service post offices and at the official of the Secretaries of State, Defense and Veteran's Affairs, and Director of the Selective Service System," according to Defense Prisoner of War/Missing Personnel Office Web site. At Hill Air Force Base, the flag is recognized every Wednesday with a retreat ceremony at the 75th Air Base Wing Headquar- ters building. Retreat is a ceremony in which the U.S. flag is honored when lowered in the evening. A Retreat Ceremony includes the playing of two songs — "Retreat" and "To the Colors." During the playing of "Retreat," junior flag security detail members assume the position of attention and move to the base flagstaff to arrange the halyards for proper lowering of the flag. Once the halyards are arranged, the flag is lowered slowly and with dignity. "The Retreat is very important," said Sergeant McClure, "It protects the colors for the night and represents the nation that we must protect." For questions about the flag or flag ceremonies contact the Hill AFB Honor Guard at 777-3967.
