As part of a Department of Defense strategy to modernize its weapons systems, the Air Force implemented Program Budget Decision 720, a directive which calls for a significant manpower reduction across the workforce, both military and civilian. While the 649 CLSS is expected to close in September 2010, members of the unit will be reassigned globally across all Air Force bases and continue to perform in their current discipline. They will continue to serve and deploy as required to support operations. Two civilians and 180 military personnel will be affected by the closure. 'The 180 military that we have would be reassigned based on Air Force requirements," said Lt. Col. Daniel Sny, 649 CLSS commander. "The two civilians would be reassigned right here at Hill AFB." • > In addition to the 649 CLS's at Robins AFB, Gav and Tinker AFB, Okla., are also expected to be cut. The three squadrons are the last of their kind in the Air Force. According^) the Air Force Material Command, the CLSS concept is tip longer unique. -; "Today, all Airmen are expeditionary," said AFMC officials in a written statement. "The Air Force transformed its training, fitness and warfighting structure into forces that are ready to deploy and perform as required. Basically, the concept has been inculcated into every logistics unit" ;* Although the active duty squadrons will be eliminated, the Air Force will still be capable of providing excellentexpeditionary support • ] "While this does eliminate the remaining dedicated active duty squadrons, it doesn't eliminate the Air Force's capability to provide required expeditionary support lo our warfighting units," Colonel Sny said. "AFMC is nenj' in the planning stage to determine the most cost effective method to provide high quality and timely expeditionary depot support to our warfighters. Most likely, it will ba ji combination of depot civilian and contractor field teams/* The deactivation is part of the Air Force Smart Operations 21 initiative, which calls for accomplishing the mission of the Air Force while maximizing its value. • „' 75th Air Base Wing Legal Office Last month the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration passed a regulation requiring manufacturers to tell consumers if their newly purchased cars are equipped with an event data recorder. Although this regulation does not go into effect until 2010, chances are your vehicle already has an EDR. According to the National Motorist Association, in 2004 over 30 million vehicles on the road were equipped with EDRs.
