I have stood there waiting to go across as much as five minutes. One day there were three security police cars that went by, and they did not stop. The speed limit is 30 mph, and I know that some people are going more than 30. I don't know what the solution is. Maybe orange flags like down in Salt Lake? Something needs to be done, or there is going to be a major accident. I'm also concerned about pedestrian traffic crossing Wardleigh Road — in both the south and west areas of the base. We've asked a team of folks to develop some initiatives we can implement to make the entire Southgate Road area safer ... We're also doing a couple of things right now to make the west area, in particular, safer. First, we're working to get the tunnel — located one block to the north of the particular crosswalk you mentioned — back in good, operational order. Once this is done, pedestrians should be able to cross the street safely, day or night. Second, there will be additional security forces patrols along Wardleigh with the intent of forcing drivers to adhere to posted speed limits. Also, as this super team of pros finish assessing the Southgate area, I'm going to ask them to take a hard look at the west areas as well... We all realize everyone is in a hurry at the end of the day, but that's no excuse for causing unsafe conditions. Motorists should be driving the speed limit and stopping to allow pedestrians to cross the street in crosswalks. Pedestrians should be using designated crosswalks, checking for traffic before stepping in the street or using the available tunnel near the South Gate.
