Show 8 TIMES August 17. 2006 Safety still important after training wheels come off BY MITCH SHAW Hilltop Times staff As Labor Day nears and the 101 Critical Days ol" Summer winds down, the need for safety awareness is still present, especially for those riding bicycles. With gas prices hovering around all-time highs, many see the bicycle as a great means of alternative transportation. While bicycles are a great way to get around during the summer, riders must be aware of the inherent safety hazards that can accompany them. Riding on busy streets, riding without proper safety gear, riding when it is dark, or riding beyond one's capabilities are all ways that bicyclists can put themselves in danger. "Most commonly, people get hurt riding bicycles because they don't wear the recommended safety gear," said Staff Sgt. Justin Forsgren, 75th Security Forces Squadron. "On Hill you are required to wear a bicycle helmet if you get on a bicycle. Knee and elbow pads are also highly encourPhoto by Beth Young aged." The application process remains open for two weeks, closing on Sept. 15. The program provides existing supervisors the opportunity to gain some valuable insight into the management of their employees and their workloads, and at the same time provide potential future leaders the same opportunity. The next session will begin in late October and consists of four Weber State University courses, and about 275 hours of organic training. Employees (non-supervisory) who have an interest in potentially becoming future leaders are encouraged to apply. To apply, visit https:// hillnet.hill.af.mil/DMRT/. Interested applicants must be permanent civilian employees, GS-07 or WG-05 or higher; must not have any disciplinary actions or leave abuse history; and must have at least a "fully successful" appraisal. Program funding is approved by each wing or staff office who gives final approval authority for the applicant to participate. Rating criteria is based on an average of appraisals for the last three years, awards earned in the last three years, education and work experience. Points are assigned to the rating criteria, and the top 50 scoring individuals are the ones who will be interviewed, with the top 25 of the interviewees being selected to participate. The courses teach effective writing; developing and implementing organizational values; effective leadership and management; encouraging positive behavior; empowerment; team-oriented problem solving; leading and facilitating teams; change and conflict management; project management; and organizational risk taking. Cadre will attend the college portion after duty hours, on their own time, usually 3:30-5:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. (An exception is supervisors from the 3(HMh Maintenance Wing, who may attend the college portion on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:30-3:30 p.m. during dayshift duty hours.)The on-base portion is provided during normal dayshift hours. Leadership Development training includes about 170 classroom hours taught over a 15-month period. Students earn 11 hours of college credit. There are four courses, taught at Weber State University's Davis campus, and 275 hours of additional on base training. Completion of the program doesn't guarantee job placement or promotion. In the 309 MXW, all supervisory referral certificates are reviewed for LDT candidates. Program completion isn't mandatory for an employee to be selected into management. Plans and policy are getting a fresh look for all other wings or staff offices to tailor the program to their needs.
