Antelope Drive, Suite 175, Layton, UT 84041 An eye condition that we see more often then I would have expected during my training, is keratoconus. Keratoconus is a degeneration of the tissue in the outer most layer of the eye called the cornea. With keratoconus, the persons cornea is weakened, allowing the pressure inside the eye to push outward, causing a bulge in the eye. This degeneration usually starts in late teens or into the twenties, and is characterized by decreased vision (usually one eye being worse that the other.) At first, the person can be corrected well by using glasses or regular contact lenses. Later, if the condition worsens, the person is usually best corrected by using gas permeable (hard) contact lenses, or they may need surgical treatment. Many people ask if they will go blind from keratoconus? The answer is no because the affected area with keratoconus is only one part of the complex visual system. A better question is, will I be able to see well enough to perform my daily tasks? With the use of contact lenses, the person is in most cases able to read and drive, but not always with 20/20 vision. At Mountain View Eye Center we use a computer-generated map of the front surface on a persons eye, to follow the persons condition as well as in helping design the best contact lens available. If you know of anyone who has kerataconus, or you are wondering about a family member, we would love to see them. (801) 773-2233 • Fax (801) 773-2375 Base Information 777-1411 |
