The triathlon, which is held every August, begins with a 400-meter swim (200 for intermediate-level participants), continues with a 13-mile bike race that loops the base from the fitness center around Foulois Road to Wardleigh Road and back to the fitness center, and ends with a 2.8-mile run around the youth fishing pond. The triathlon featured participants as young as age 12 with two categories, one for advanced athletes and the other for intermediate participant. "We had a huge turnout this year, including enough participants to have the intermediate category," said Senior Airman Aimee Santos of the Hess Fitness Center, which holds various special sporting events to promote general fitness on the base. Teams were allowed to divide the individual events among their members to allow everyone the opportunity to compete. The Echavarria family was one of those teams. They broke the swim up between mother, Elizabeth and daughter, Chinzia. Son, Marcus rode the whole bike course himself, leaving the run to his dad, Ralph. "We did the triathlon together last year and couldn't wait to do it again this year," Ralph said. "It's a wonderful event for a family to participate in." T-shirts were awarded to all participants of the triathlon along with the satisfaction of finishing a tough event.
