SEAN CARTER Hilltop times staff The main aircraft runway here is scheduled to close Friday and remain closed through mid-September to undergo the last phase of necessary asphalt replacement procedures. "I think this is a small price for the flyers to pay for a foreign object damagefree, dependable runway that they can count on for 15-20 years in the future," said Brian Watson, Hill's airfield manager. The project entails replacing a 200-foot by 10,500-foot section of the runway with two layers of 3-inch thick asphalt. Work on the runway is scheduled to take place 20 hours a day, six days a week until completed. To ensure longevity and strength, the runway will be repaired by removing the old asphalt, grounding down the soil further and applying two, 2-inch layers of asphalt instead of one 3inch layer as was previously used, said Hugh Ryan, Airfield Management Office deputy chief.
