Show Hilltop Times May 12, 2005 Cops Continued from 1 Even when things get quiet on base, patrolmen are always alert and looking out for anything suspicious. "I look for anything that seems out of the ordinary," Sergeant Phillips said. "After a while, we start to recognize things that seem suspicious - things that other people wouldn't think anything of." Working an average of 55 hours a week is normal for a cop. Because cops are always on duty, they don't have the opportunity to participate in activities like Wingman Day and Family Day. A patrolman has to be at least a senior airman and take the Quality Control Test, which certifies the patrolman to be on patrol. Sergeant Phillips said that patrol work can be stressful sometimes. "I have people yell and curse at me all the time," Sergeant Phillips said. "You can't say anything back. You just have to suck it up, keep your professionalism and clo your job. You can't lake it personally. They're not yelling at you. They're yelling at the cop." But, there is a lot of satisfaction that comes from providing security for the base. "Your satisfaction really comes from catching a perpetrator," Sergeant Phillips said. "If you have one good arrest, this will motivate you for weeks. It's just what you need." Shows like Cops and CSI don't portray patrol duty accurately, Sergeant Phillips said. "It's totally different," he said. "It's dramatized for ratings. A good portion of police work is boring." What a lot of people don't see is "behind the scenes." With every incident that occurs, a cop has to sacrifice a lot of time for paperwork, because every incident needs to be documented. "Say it takes me an hour to investigate an incident," he explains. "It will take me three additional hours to do the paperwork. You become a cop for the action. You don't become a cop for the paperwork." A good day is when there are no incidents or accidents on base. "Sometimes I drive around all day and not one thing happens," Sergeant Phillips said. "A cop" doesn't want to drive around all day. He wants be out there arresting people. "But at the same time, that's a good thing. We have deterred people from coming on base and committing crimes. It's like doing your job too well." Testing Continued from 1 cost, said Colonel William Tate, deputy, AFMC Surgeon General. "In turn, we have a responsibility to our civilian work force to provide a safe and drug-free workplace," he said. "It all comes back to being a good wingman and looking out for each other." The testing changes come in conjunction with modified federal workplace drug-testing guidelines established by the Department of Health and Human Services. For more information on the new program, contact Ms. Smith at Ext. 5-5515. Portions of the story were taken from AFMC News Service.
