By Shad West Mel Graff transitions from the run to the bike during the spring triathlon. Mr. Graff won the event In 55.11. The athletes started at Centennial Park and worked their way around the Youth fishing pond and back to the gym for a total of 2.5 miles. They transitioned to the bike and rode 10.5 miles around Perimeter Road. The athletes finished the event with an 800-meter swim in the indoor pool. With two competitors breathing down his neck, Mel Graff won the spring triathlon by 12 seconds Saturday to take the title of "Iron man." Normally, triathlons consist of three events in order, swimming, biking and running. After taking suggestions from regular competitors, the Hess Fitness Center staff changed the format of the spring triathlon. Athletes started at Centennial Park and worked their way around the Youth fishing pond and back to the gym for a total of 2.5 miles. They transitioned to the bike and rode 10.5 miles around Perimeter Road. The athletes finished the event with an 800-meter swim In the indoor pool. "When we decided to change the event, weather was one of the factors we took into account," Staff Sgt. Marcus Darnell said. "Also, some of the participants said they would prefer to race without having multiple heats in the pool." Temperatures were in the low 50s at the start of the event and the racers appreciated the changed format. y. "With the heat system last fall it was hard to tell where you stood with the other competitors," Mel Graff said. Finishing in the pool, the athletes swam diagonal laps starting in the southwest corner, working their way to the northwest corner of the pool. As they completed a lap in each lane, they could gauge where their opponents were on the course. Mr. Graff knew he needed an exceptional run and bike ride to make up for his swimming. "I tried to come off the run and transition into a good bike ride," Mr. Graff said. "Both Matt (Durkin) and Maiya (Kraus) are excellent swimmers. I knew they would gain on me in the pool." Capt. Durkin and Capt. Kraus pulled within a minute of Mr. Graff during the swim, but he held on to take the title. "You just can't get a better • race than the one we had today," Mr. Graff said. This was the first triathlon for Captain Durkin, who is training for the St. George marathon held later this year. Mr. Durkin didn't even have a bike for the event. "I borrowed a friend's bike for the race," Captain Durkin said. Tin going to have to get one soon." The next race is a half-marathon and is scheduled for May 21.
