Stephen Mithchell Energy Management Office IMA There are plenty of opportunities to save energy by taking some simple but very effective measures around both the workplace and your home. Many of these efforts require nothing more than being conscientious of your surroundings and taking a proactive approach to cutting costs and saving energy. Some of these efforts include: Workplace • Maintain facility temperatures between 65-68 degrees. Dress in layers and according to the weather to cut down having to adjust the thermostat. • Open blinds and curtains on sunny afternoons to take advantage of the natural heating and lighting. • Ensure windows and exterior or freight doors are closed as much as possible. Report any drafts or air leaks to the building manager. • Take the stairs instead of the elevator to save energy and get a little exercise to boot. • If you're the last person to leave the office, ensure that all lights are turned off and turn down the thermostat to 55 degrees. • Turn off all radios, lights and computer monitors when you leave for more than 10 minutes. Photos by Tech. Sgt. Kim Yearyean-Slers and Beth Young What was once seen as an inhospitable steep hillside covered with "high desert weeds" has been transformed into an inviting landscape next to B!dg. 849. The design includes a terraced hillside with a large patio, three picnic table pads and pathways for people to enjoy their lunch or take a pensive stroll or energetic aerobic walk, incorporated into the area are a variety of textures to include rock, mulch and a PolyPavement paving surface. Botanical selections were made based on how "water wise" and compatible the plant is with the Utah climate. "Of all our resources, people are the most important," commented Brig. Gen. Robert McMahon, Maintenance director, at the area's opening. "This effort by the Maintenance Directorate is one more example of taking care of our people and communicating to them how important they are to us in accomplishing the mission." Home • Keep the thermostat set between 65-68 degrees, if health permits (warmer temperatures are recommended for households with infants). Each degree the thermostat is lowered can save up to 3 percent on heating bills. • Lower the thermostat before you go to bed. • Start using energy-saving settings on refrigerators, dishwashers, washing machines and clothes dryers. • Ensure that ventilation grilles are not blocked. • Survey your incandescent lights and replace the bulbs with compact fluorescents. • Tackle some easy and inexpensive energy saving home projects. Insulating, caulking and weather-stripping can add up to big savings of energy and money. Base residents can pick these easy-to-install items up at the self-help store. • Turn your water heater to the warm setting (120 degrees) to save energy and avoid scalding your hands. • Surround the water heater with an insulating blanket. An insulating blanket will pay for itself in one year or less.
