Show 0 Hilltop Times October 7, 2004 Sports 'Cats coaches teaching at fitness center by Shad West Hilltop Times staff What once passed quietly as just another offering at the Hess Fitness Center three years ago has turned into one ofjEhe most anticipated events of the year. Weber State University basketball head coach Joe Cravens ari$ his staff will hold their third annual Basketball Camp, Saturday at 10 a.m. lt Jhree years ago there wasn't a lot of interest in the camp," Karen Wright, Hess Fitness Center director said. "With the aniount of phone calls and inquiries we have received, this year's camp should be big." That interest in Weber State basketball may be fueled by the teams' 2002-2003 Big Sky Conference Championship run and appearance in the NCAA tournament where they lost to 19th ranked Wisconsin, 81-74. The aggressive and offense minded Coach Cravens and his staff have become a local favorite, as the 'Cats have shown they are Big Sky Conference Championship contenders each year. When Coach Cravens and his staff aren't recruiting in the offseason, they hold five to six basketball camps for the public on campus each summer. The exception to that rule is when they bring their camp to the gates of Hill AFB. "We want the Hill AFB community to know that we support their difficult mission," assistant coach John Stroia said. "This is a way to show them we care." Unlike other camps they hold, the coaching staff realize that the majority of participants at their camp here, are older, and they adjust their format to reflect the skill levels of the base's participants. "After the last two camps, we found through trial and error that the athletes that participate on base want to learn less defensive skills," Coach Stroia said. "Along with fundamentals, we will throw a lot of offense at the players." "This is one of our favorite events to offer," Mrs. Wright said. "Our relationship with Coach Cravens and his staff has flourished. As long as they are willing to come on base, we will be willing to hold the event for our customers." The basketball camp'is open to anyone age 13-years-old and older and will be held in the Hess Fitness Center's gym from 10 a.m. to noon. This event is free and anyone interested in participating can call the Hess Fitness Center at Ext. 7-2762 for more information.
