Moab was either by fording or on the ferry A bridge was needed and on January 25 1911 Rep J P Miller introduced a bill into the Utah legislature for an appropriation of $45000 to build the bridge The bill was unanimously passed by both houses and signed by Gov Spry on March 21 1911 However the bill was for $35000 but the Grand County commissioners decided to go ahead with the bridge's construction and to later hold a bond election to cover the deficit The election was held on March 19 1912 and the bond passed with only one vote cast against the proposal The Midland Bridge Co was awarded the contract and construction foreman G W Olliver began the project on August 30 1911 By February 8 1912 the structural work was completed and on February 15 the bridge was opened for use The accompanying photo shows work being done on the bridge's approaches The man on the left is Loren L Taylor long time editor and publisher of the The girl on the right is Pearl Watts Taylor’s future wife To her left is Melba (Taylor) Hammond Thu bridge was dedicated on April 8 1912 and a banquet was held to celebrate the event Some 1300 people attended a barbecue at which two fatted oxen and several sheep and hogs were roasted The occasion also featured speeches and a musical program In early 1920 the US Geological Survey Issued a warning that the heavy winter snow foil would cause a large spring runoff and urged all Colorado River bridges to be protected The State Road Commission responded by raising the bridge four feet to give greater clearance By the early 1950's the need for a new bridge was apparent In 1954 construction began on the present bridge which was opened to traffic on Sept 28 1955 The old bridge was closed and later removed (Photo courtesy of Mrs Pearl Taylor) See more Pix
