executive director of the states High Level Nuclear Waste Storage Opposition Task Force The state is among four parties hoping to intervene as opponents to the proposed waste site The Goshutes and a group of scientists vouching for the safety of moving and storing spent nuclear fuel rods want standing in the case as further PRESS THE ASSOCIATED BY BEN WINSLOW wood-choppin- B3 Tuesday January 27 1998 The idea of a central storage site for the nations commercially owned nuclear reactors has never gone this far The Nuclear Regulatory Commission meets in Salt Lake City today to begin assessing an applinuclear cation to store high-levwaste at a remote spot of Utah desert owned by the Skull Valley Band of the Goshute Indian tribe conThe weeklong ference wont directly dictate the future of the proposal which comes from a consortium of utilities outside of Utah The commission will simply hear comments of those with a stake in the matter and decide which parties can participate in the lengthy hearing process But every step the NRC takes with this application will make history in the long dispute over what to do with waste generated a fact by nuclear power plants not lost on the parties involved We are in uncharted territory here said the tribes attorney Danny Quintana whose clients want the millions of dollars the storage facility has promised If there is uncertainty about where the proposal will go there is none in the administration of Republican Gov Mike Leavitt who has created a task force with the sole purpose of killing the deal We feel its significant that it hasnt gone this far because the g Dave Goerlitz a former model for Winston cigarettes talks with students about the evils of smoking at Provo's Independence High on Monday He will visit 15 Utah schools this week
