very large and asprec alive audience filled the auditorium of the reference loom of the new public library during the dedication cs es which were held there last wed nedday afternoon mayor andrew L mitchell occupied the chair after the rendering of the national anthem america by a choir especially orga nihed for the occasion and alu iivo cation by the rev S allison mayor made a short address in which aich he paid the library committee and especially its chairman james D stack a very I 1 agh compliment he ile said that jn spite of some very persistent adverse criticism and corn coin ment that the committee had perce 41 EUREKA PUBLIC LIBRARY vered and was largely instrumental ir in bringing about the result attained he tender er the chief donor andrew oar car negie a splendid tribute and stated that he hoped the day would come when all towns villages and hamlets would have occasion to express then their heartfelt thanks to mr carnegie or to any other public tedman who would make it possible for the people to enjoy the privileges that th s munificent gift would undoubtedly undo confer on the people of eureka he ile was followed by prof howard it R driggs secretary of the state library association v who ho in a master ful address which was frequently in with applause gave b ureka the palm for leadership in the library gymnasium Gyna 0 nt dealt with th physical wants N ants of ahn coin community finnity and gave a splendid lecture on the training of the minds of the younger people and the necessity of beahn g them an all appreciation of good litera tuie fore the rev P mannion of st patrick s church follo followed Aed with an ad aress oress the theme of which was that there ft as a necessary connection be tween education and industry and that without the latter virtue aduca tion would be of little avail and he stated that excellence is nen neer er con f erred on any anyone one except as the re col opense of labor bishop peter borup s remarks were listened to with great attention and he gave the audience some good advice in regard to helping along something that would be of benefit to the corn cool eunit and would tei ter d to make wake bet ter men and women of the child en ell who were nere growing up and his praise of the efforts of mr NI r carnegie aloi g this line was as unstinted prof baker supt bupt of the cureka public schools was thelast the last speaker and he made a scholarly address which was listened to with rapt at he ile treated his subject from a purely academic standpoint and dwelt da elt largely upon the benefits tl at w accrue of ogden he read theli the list of donations donation sto to haiar fund and beffie dispersing miss aliss genevieve Geue vieve sullivan sang the sta spangled banner the choir and audience joining in tle tl e chorus the list of the donations will be given in our next issue the banquet at the elk lodge room lo 10 the evening was one of the most brilliant events that has ever tal en place in eureka about two hundred people sa down to the feast t and the room and tables were ta taste ste fully decorated there were four tables in all and at the upper table which was placed across the hall v aare ere seated the distinguished guests of the evening governor spry was seated in the center to his right sat senator sutherland and to hia his left state supt bupt of public instruction A 0 nelson and howard hovard R driggs secretary of the state library gym acard at this table were also seated the other of the even ing miss anabel mooney mayor A L mitchell professor baker and the various members of the library corn com cittee and their wives three long tables were arranged lengthways of the room and another table stretched acciola the lower lover end of the hall after a short address of of the new law passed for the purpose of fo g just such move ments as they were celebrating he said that the voik wag was principally directed to benefit the bos boy s and girls of the city that were fast growing up to manhood and woman hood and to foster in their young minds a love of country and home he I 1 his audience flat the vast sum of 13 daily for every school day in the year was being spent in this state and thia this expendi expends ture fore is not made for any purpose othe other r than to coer cover expenses in the schools up to the ath g ade he ile said he was in favor of the movement for the reason that it would tend towards ards amit amity among the inhabitants of this fair state and still the strife that tliatha has a hith erto arto existed let ua us get together I 1 he gain ed by the community by just such movements aa as the one eureka was celebrating by son some I 1 e reminiscent re marks about the early conditions of eureka fhe junior unior senator nas as followed by state S of public in A 0 nelson who gave some timely advice to the manage manag e ment ot of the library and to the person who should become librarian in the choice of the books for the shelves of the library and cautioned caution bd the parents to enter their names dames against allowing newspapers and magazines that were not absolutely absolute clean in their mike make up and contents to enter their homes A solo the bugler was render ed by walter jensen who was accod accoro danied by miss anabel mooney the address addres of howard it driggs secretary ot of the state library board which followed was a powerful effort and li 11 felled to with close attention mr air driggs covered nearly all of what he had said in his big forceful speech of the afternoon he pleaded the cause of the young people and thanked the people for their splendid welcome and tl breir air grand efforts to place eureka in the forefront of a movement that was going to benefit the state to
