leading Chinese sports official attributes his country's excellent performances to government programs and expanded facilities Guo Qinglong president of the Chinese Swimming Association defended world fabricated rumor the Xinhua News Agency reported Sunday D-- l tem he says I figured that was a more efficient way for me to find players than killing myself pounding the pavement Over a four-yespan he won 89 games greasing the skids by building close relationships with players from varied backgrounds and coaches from big schools The community college experience was the most meaningful that I've had ho says Coaching sweeping floors recruiting raising money being a counselor a psychologist a bus driver becoming a surrogate faI did all of that ther to the players There were times when I got calls at 2 am to help guys who were in trouble I had to bail a couple of young men out of jail and I went to court with others But the best part of coaching is the relationships with the kids" Cleveland's fondest memory in coaching came three years ago after his team beat San Jose City College for a berth in the California JC Final Four We finally had gotten where we wanted to be he says "We celebrated by going to Taco Bell I remember driving the team bus down Highway 99 at 3 in the morning after that win up there We had six African Americans one Hispanic and a few white kids on that team They all slept leaving me to my thoughts It was a great feeling I remember thanking the Lord for the opportunity to be doing what I was doing I looked back at those kids going down the man I felt close to my Maker road that night The anecdote tidily explains one of the reasons BYU wanted the man from nowhere No one knew for sure whether he could coach at the Division I level but everyone on the search committee knew he could build bridges BYU basketball needed bridges built It had become an island during the later Reid years losing LDS recruits rarely finding talent with diverse backgrounds or in diverse places and concurrently alienating much of the community from which it supposedly drew support due at least in part to a perceived agenda involving the Reid boys guards Randy and Robbie The former Cougar coach had his gifts none of which was warmth in reaching out to those around him or connectedness to a newer younger hipper generation Cleveland is the Father-Knows-Be- anti-Rog- Any Audience: Since his hiring last spring Cleveland has spent a preponderant amount of time extending himself to fans students players recruits the sports media almost anyone who wanted to talk For this article he allowed a reporter to shadow him for the better part of four hours straight through Midnight Madness I want to get to know people he says I've had the opportunity to give a lot of thought to where this program is to evaluate it I went into the home of every player to see what's going on with them and their family Ive talked to former players We had a golf tournament and invited them to come home Some of those guys hadn't seen each other for years I mean this is BYU basketball Hell I'm focused in on that Working 18 19 hours a day on that I'm just a normal guy trying to get a job done Therein lies Cleveland's charm He's not the smartest guy around and he admits it: There are at least 10 community college coaches I know of who have forgotten more about basketball than I know Hes not full of himself like so many of today's top college coaches He confesses that he was devastated when BYU almost hired him as an assistant a few years back but rejected him at the last second And says he was "shocked' when BYU hired him this time d He's not a jerk like so many of today's top college coaches He recruits and relates to players from varied backgrounds We'll have white players and black players all kinds of players he says And my commitment is to them to develop and intends strong relationships to bring more athletic players to a program that will stress pressure defense and flowing offense So far in addition to new recruits who may have come to Provo regardless of who was the coach Cleveland has lured three who otherwise most likely would not have considered the Cougars: Brian Hamilton a point guard from Columbia Junior College in Sacramento who is on the roster Mike Garrett a guard from Fresno City who is enrolled at BYU and has verbally committed for next season but has not yet officially signed and Ron Selleaze a forward who played for Cleveland last year who says he will join the current Cougar team in December providing he qualifies academically at Fresno City According to Cleveland it is the strength of the lies that bind that will continue to bring heretofore untapped talent to Provo He says he will reach out and keep reaching until the athletes come Those lready here are impressed two-face- African-American- y Cool Dude: In fact there has never been a head basketball coach at BYU as hip as Cleveland He is a California boy who loves the ocean loves to body surf takes a vacation every year to Newport Beach because he says you don't have to worry about anything there He has a passion for tennis and golf and has lost cash to Michael Jordan in several rounds played during basketball camps in Fresno We enjoyed each other" Cleveland says but Michael has some of my money" Yo Airness the head coach at BYU wants another shot Cool He is a movie buff who can recount all of Bill Murrays best lines in the film he considers the funniest ever made: Caddyshack" And he loves classic rock music and the sounds of Motown Crosby Stills and Nash Neil Young The Rolling Stones The Beatles Marvin Gaye I can America The Temptations still remember going to a remote theater in San Diego when I was an kid to watch the opening of I Woodstock Cleveland says loved it Its a part of me My friends and I were dancing in the aisles So the head basketball coach at BYU dances in aisles to blaring rock music And gambles on the golf course And laughs at funny movies r And taps his loafers early Saturday morning to rap And wants if he can pull it off to dress his team in black on the road to bring his team into the '90s And is a for Tommy Lee Jones in his dark duds and shades And when athletic director Rondo Fehlberg gives an opening prayer at Midnight Madness asking God in heaven to Bless us that we will commit to support our teams or some such he whispers with a smile Rondo has an agenda there And later tells a cheering throng of students: We need to recapture the spirit in the Marriott Center You have to get crrraaaaazzzzyyy! And on his way out of the building at 1:30 am greets fans like friends shaking hands with an old woman and tossing his sunglasses to a young boy No one knows for sure whether the man from nowhere can coach a lick at this level What everyone does know is that he's open warm and remarkably real That he builds bridges And he looks niiiiiiice in black For now until opening tip that is enough black-leathe- dead-ring- |
