Show - - go Errwm ' I 1 - 90 1 Zile EattI t B I i T-1- 1 5St OctoDer 17 1943 Sunday Morning 1 gdy ate in Italy 1s ' - 1 By Constantine Brown WASHINGTON D C — The progress of the military opera- tions in Italy is being watched closely by the American strategists The operations have been well planned are being carefulv executed and the men are fighting with the bravery which basmade military qualities of i i I r 1 t ' t I The long and short of the story can be contained in the follcwing two sentencesen eal Eisenhower can hold Italy ea far aa Rome with his present forces and does not have to call for reinforcements the operation will have been worthwhile If on the other hand he is compelled to ask for assistance from other theaters of operation we are likely to find ourselves in a hole The Russians have granted us an extension of the due bill for an invasion of Europe until next May We start then or else An important American force is being gathered for that offensive The time is short and the number of men and the amot:nt of equipment necessary for the battles are the largest the allies have been called on to put in the field thus the Americans respected-throughouthe world The battie for Italy is regard- ed as Of momentous Importance ' not because it could bring us into the heart of Germany: this probability was discounted be fore fighting started The stra tegic advantage we can derive ' will be only that our planes will be much closer to targets which ere now too far away from our air bases But the great interest lies in the fact that if we do not succeed in breaking down German resistance in the next few weeks and the enemy is able to bring an additional 20 divisions into Italy the forthcoming invasion of Europe across the English channel might become jeopardized This might change the entire a spect of the war Our strategists believe more strongly than their British colleagues that the only way to end the war quickly is to attack the Germans in France The Russians share that point of view and have given us to understand that unless this operation Is begun with a real force by next spring they may have to reconsider their entire position and make their own terms with the Germans Because of the difficulties of a campaign in Italy the American strategists were extremely lukewarm about the operations They believed that the Mediterranean should be cleared and that all the islands used by the enemy as submarine and air bases should be taken They went so far as to approve the idea of allied forces settling in Calabria in southern '‘ 1 - I4 i : i 1 s fl ' t i t ii i 1 ':1 11 - - - :1 ' 1 '1 ii 1 ' - I :1 ' ! ' 140 ''' ' ' s '''4' filiti ! 440 f if- v"'"'-- -- 7''-: ' ' I -— - !e r'a"''''''''l i -:' ''':' i Outnumber Germans Because of security considerations it is not possible to indicate the strength of the allied forces in Italy and north Africa It car be taken for granted however that overall we have more divisions than the nazis have In northern Italy The last report placed the German total at 18 divisions If the Germans were unable to 'send anything more than replacements to Marshal Rommel we would not have to be unduly worried General Eisenhower could handle the enemy with his present total force successfully But there is a grave danger that the nazis may move important reinforcements to Italy They are said to have hoped that we would send our armies from north Africa to Italy According to reports from reliable underground sources Marshal Gerd von Rundstedt9 who commands the German forces in western Europe stated last November when we entered north Africa that if the allies decided to fight in Italy he would no longer be worried about the invasion of western Europe The source which reported these words of the nazi general is worthy of confidence and many allied leaders are led to believe that the German general staff will leave no stone unturned to send to Marshal Rommel all the men and war material he needs to make the bat 4 The implications of such a situation are regarded as grave- Should General Eisenhower become hard pressed in a few weeks or months he cannot be ' refused assistance And the troops we may have to rush to him to equalize the enemy's strength will have to be taken from those units earmarked for the invasion of western Europe A shift of 10 20 or more from our invasion bases to Italy would make our future operations in western Europe difficult if not impossible cover other operations The Germans realize that we have staked our reputation on beating them there The offensive may have been against the better judgment of the American military men but that no longer matters So It appears probable that whatever troops can be spared from a stagnant Russian front be rushed to Italy to enable ward off the t'vvi Rommel to blows and if possibe drive Us back with losses Once embarked on the Italian -7 :' ' ' '' - " 1 4 1 7" r7 threat I - 4 : not concerned at this time with an Invasion of western Europe or ' Scandinavia where the present forces are more than Sufficient to meet any allied - -- 5 - y- ' ' zy - ' - - 9- 779 ' -- - f ' campaign it is impossible for us to leave it We must push on with every ounce of strength at our disposal If General Eisenhower is faced with a numerieally superior enemy he may in the end need 'reinforcements outside his present corn- mfroam Is —10-- --- ' A : agAisermILLs--L-mao- will make large-scaI- e operations in the Balkans impossible It kih'1 --- VI --- 1 i 4 far against any nazi force with a 'maximum of 100000 men ' Met U S Doubts But to engage the allied forces In what has been frequently described as a "bottomless sack" was not to the taste of the American general staff The friendly frictions with their British colleagues were due to this divergent point of view While the British were counting on the moral effect the occupation of Italy and the overthrow of the Mussolini regime would have on the rest of Europe the American generals were thinking in terms of how Many men would be required to conquer Italy and what the allied position would be if the battles demanded a much larger force than General Eisenhower had at his disposal f 1 could which with food and ammunition to Continue large-scal- e operations Should the nazis take advan tage of this situation and dispatch the 20 more divisions be-to Italy our situation would come dangerous indeed It is believed in competent quarters that the Germans will be able to detach 300000 men The from the Russian front allies estimated that their original force in that area was 224 divisions Some 20 have been destroyed The present nazi line is much shorter than the line of last One hundred and fifty July divisions are considered more than sufficient as a defensive force The needed reserves are included in this number Fifty divisions thus are left for fighting in other sectors The Berlin high command' knows that weather conditions tie for Italy so costly that we will be compelled to send important reinforcements from this country to General Eisenhower In the light of what is happening on the RUSSiall front it is believed that the nazis may be able to detach an additional 20 divisions—and possibly more—to check our advance in Italy and possibly push us back It is improbable that important battles will be fought in Russia in the near future Weather conditions the distance from the main base of supply of the Russian armies — some 650 miles—and a certain amount of weariness after many months of continuous advance make major battles on the Dnieper line extremely unlikely The American general staff is fully aware of the problem the Russians have in supplying 4000000 men cross-chann- el -
