Show lio SALT LAKE TRIBUNE TUESDAY MORNING JANUARY SURPR Serenity Restored :By JOHN C DERKSz Editor of The Salt Lake Tribune Sports It with a feeling of genuine relief that we enter a upon period of intercollegiate athletic competition shorn of turmoil and threats of turbulence The concord arrived at by athletic authorities of the University of Utah and Brigham Young university is highly pleasing to us and also we believe to friends of both schools who had been driven to the contemplation of a possible season of crimination and recrimination The amazing phase of the situation is that so great a stretch of time was permitted to elapse before an adjustment was reached or even indeed any known effort was made toward that end Measured by the calendar more issue than a month passed between the time arose at the meeting of the Rocky Mountainjzonference early in December and the promulgation of an official statement to the effect that a basis of understanding had is 14 1938 1 N They Are New Jack Reynolds world’s welterweight champion at wrestling who comes to town for a top-spmatch with Benny Bolt at the arena Friday is 'generally credited with hav- ing developed the rocking chair leg split to Its present degree pf perfection While Jack didn’t invent the hold there is no manner bf doubt that he has brought It to a point where It usually brings quick and painful results Although Reynolds is the world’s welter king he will be over the weight limit for that class in Friday about Jack will probably be about 165 pounds which makes him even with Benny Danny Savich cames back to the arena Friday after a period of wandering about as wrestlers are wont to do He meets Balk Estes in the semifinal Danny has grown in size no little since his last arena appearance He and the clever Estes should make a good match of it A newcomer in the person of Jimmy Murphy a light heavy from down Texas way meets George Bennett and Jerry Marcus of New York who made his first appearance here last week meets John Fellos another newcomer this one from Detroit Fellos is said to be a thoroughly capable grappler BRANAGAN Three weeks ago the eight teams in the Jordan district of region two awaited the opening league encounters Four of thSyclubs— Jordan Granite Murray ah4 Davis— were given the Inside track in the quest of the title held by the others— Cyprus Three Bingham and GrantsvlUe— were listed as “contendere” and the other team in the district— Tooelo— was dismissed with the statement “just been established another ball club” That was three weeks ago At the TOO MUCH DELAY length it did having recorded victories Each day of delay but added to the impatience of Buffaloes over the strong Cyprus crew and a public and as day succeeded day without the speedy Davis high school ma- whthe mystified bringing forth an authoritative explanation of the grounds upon which the University of Utah had so sumdtarily dealt with representatives of the Brigham Yomgjiniver sity in respect of the scheduling of a football game people quite pardonably began Jo wonder if there were in deed real and serious foundation for the jtep taken by the University of Utah ' Another point that causes no little astonishment is that in the end the executive head of a great institution none other than the president of the University of Utah himself found it necessary to exercise the authority of his high office to put a stop to a condition of affairs that might easily have got out of control SOMETHING LACKING There must be— and manifestly there is— something lacking in the machinery set up at the University of Utah for the government and conduct of athletics that renders it necessary for the president to set aside his important duties and devote time to a squabble about a football game It may be that the system is cumbersome or weak in structure or that the personnel of its administration is wanting in cour age and decision These things we do not dwell upon because they are matters which should not have to be pointed out One of the evident essentials of a continuation of cordial relations between the University of Utah in that which relates to its athletic activities and the public which supports those activities is a closer bond of confidence That the public is vitally concerned with the welfare of athletics at the University of Utah has been made especially clear to us since this lamentable dispute arose We have had many communications recently in which our correspondents deeply deplored the whole unhappy affair If in this connection a suggestion be permitted it is this: That the University of Utah establish a bureau of public relations Such an agency we sincerely believe could be made to function to the immediate and lasting benefit of both public and the University of Utah Meanwhile we repeat that we are gratified that tran quility has returned to intercollegiate athletics in Utah May it be abiding!
