Show tffhrvrrmi hs page 14 The Grantsville GAZETTE Wednesday February 17 1988 LETTER from p 6 regarding the "You’re in Charge" program that was presented to Grantsville Elementary Schools The writer suggests we as parents would be attending the program blind without prior knowledge of its contents Division of Family Services welcomes concerned individuals to preview the video and will make arrangements for working parents They will also provide written materials which cover the information presented These materials cover the questions we as parents may have regarding the video The following statistics were provided by Diane Nielson at Tooele Division of Family Services: In Tooele County there are between 20-3- 0 reported cases of child abuse or neglect monthly Of these five are substantiated for further action either by removal of the children criminal charges filed or family counseling The remainder mav be valid complaints however there may not be enough evidence to pursue or they may be a "one time” episode In 1985 Tooele County had 263 reported child abuse cases In the same year the state of Utah had 5127 children who were victims of physical sexual and emotional abuse and neglect In 1987 our state substantiated 1022 cases of sexual abuse "These children have been robbed of their childhoods and future" (Quoted from Gary Jensen of Protective Services Special Division for Utah DFS) We as parents have the right to be involved in our children’s education to ask questions and to be aware of materials being presented to them But our children have the right to 'have alternatives to child abuse other than violence against themselves ' Our community is not immune to this violence Eighty-fiv- e percent of offenders are not strangers but were known to the children and their families Twenty-seve- n percent were members of the immediate household I strongly urge parents to preview programs such as "You’re in Charge" and to ask questions before they make public accusations against the schools and the program’s contents Sincerely Jannette Long must strengthen our social security system and care for the aged -
