Show nephi club objects to judge greenwood holding court in this city during the present term judge or gr enwood v N ill not hold court in eu ell reka for the accommodation of the people of tintic gintic according to anfor mation recen ed from nephi this week it seems that the nephi commercial club went to judge greenwood and made a kick against the holding of coart in eureka claiming that it took the county clerk away from his office and that it took business away from that city consequently when the time came for setting the ferrando case which had been partially heard when the court was held in this city judge greenwood set the case for march 2nd at nephi i the nephi commercial club is of IJ course looking after the interests of zephi Is echi which is perfectly right and proper but in this particular instance we believe the members of that or gamza tion are making a big mistake the railroad companies are about the only ones who profit by the taking of gintic tintic tin tic people over to nephi for court matters Forin for instance staneL we will say that there is a probate divorce or some other case in which only clintic people are interested to be heard in the district court for everyone of the witnesses and attorneys it means t an expense et of say 10 even though the case may not the atten ji tion of the court for more than alf fifteen teen ini minutes these witnesses and actor i may go to nephi on the morn h ing train and back at night and each v one of them will perhaps spend 60 50 cents for lunch in that city the ft balance of their expense money or the big end of it going to the railroad companies if the court was held here they would perhaps lose but a few minutes time and be out nothing tor for expenses we believe that when it comes to matters of this kind the question of whether or not some hotel manisto mant sto make or lose 50 cents should not be Y taken into consideration but that if there is an opportunity for the court to save the litigants both money and time then he should take advantage of that opportunity in other vi the court v m ho he is a s arvant of the people should work to the interests of the greatest number at all times the gintic tintic people pay some taxes n fact they pay the bulk of the taxes in juab count tt ey ev also furnish more than two thirds of the court cases and mana man times the court cal andar is made up almost entirely of cases in which v aich only tintic gintic people are interested it la is not an uncommon matter for judge greenwood to mon e his court to salt lake in fact we can cite several cases where he has done this the arguments in most of the important cases are heard in salt lake and in one instance the court cour officials were in the capital for nearly chri e weeks a case in order that those interested might be saved con sid erable expense and by the way the nephi commercial club did not have anything to say about the matter this week a tintic gintic man and his at torney appeared in nephi and the for mer entered a plea of guilty to a charge of battery stating tl at it would be cheaper tor for him to pay a fine rather than to fight the case be cause it would be necessary for him to bring witnesses from tintic even the prosecuting attorney admitted that the case was a weak one and that it would be almost impossible to secure a conviction had it been possible to hear the case in gintic tintic that man could have produced the necessary witnesses to clear himself we recall a case which was despos ed of by judge greenwood upon his last visit here A widow who was trying to settle up a small estate was able to save about 25 because it was not necessary for her and her actor ney to take a trip to the county seat had it necessary for her to go to nephi her trip would not have bene fitted the business denof men of that town to the extent of more than 04 1 it costs the state no more for judge greenwood to hold court in eureka than it does for him to hold court in nephi and it means a big san saving ing in ti ne and money to cintio people who are interested in the cases which are ip for hearing why should the people of tintic gintic be put to unnecessary expense |
