But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not. ; “So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, ‘He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at here — John 8:3-7 The three men sat in the pews to one side of the all-but-empty chapel, heads bowed, taking turns praying. As one prayed, the other two would ac- company on backup, offering soft ‘‘Amens’’ and ‘‘Yes, Jesuses.”’ It was a special prayer service, held in Ogden last Sunday at the Finley Temple Church of God in Christ. the subject of the men’s fervent prayers read like a Who’s Who in Pond Scum: Jim Bakker, Marion Barry, Pete Rose, Neil Bush, Jimmy Swaggart, John Poindexter. : Granted, there isn’t a whole lot of sympathy floating around for these men. Seems most folks would just as soon spit on them as pray for them. Nevertheless, here were three men, asking the Lord’s blessings upon the despised and downtrodden. The turnout for the prayer service, despite having been announced in the newspaper, was less than colossal — perhaps an indication of the unpopularity of Bakker and the boys. In fact, the three men —the Rev. Robert L. Harris of Ogden; the Rev. David Bloomquist, pastor of North Park Foursquare Church in Roy; and Ray Sarter, an elder in the aforemen- tioned Roy church — were the only ones in attendance. ‘“We were expecting more,’’ Harris admitted, *“but the important thing is the Lord came.”’ Earning particular mention in the prayer service was Jim Bakker, whom Harris and the others believe was treated unfairly. Harris showed particular contempt for the judge who gave Bakker his harsh sentence. ‘Pm willing to call that judge uncircumcised or double-demon possessed or ungodly or unjust,’’ Harris said. ‘‘Jim Bakker got 45 years in prison. People who have committed murder haven’t gotten that much time.” And so Harris prays for the former PTL head and his family. But Harris also believes faith without works is dead. That’s why he plans on sending a telegram to President Bush, informing him of the recent prayer service and asking him to intercede on Bakker’s behalf. And if the telegram doesn’t get a satisfactory response from the president, Harris plans on taking it a step further.
