A THOUSAND WORDPOWER YEARS The people’s newspaper Dear Miss Young: Dear Ms. Young: housing problems, we need people that can help us supply our Arts and Crafts stock which is down to nothing, it’s simple, WE NEED in every area that you can give, there ON BEING A VOLUNTEER By KARIN E. TUTTLE Most of us have lived -are old people to be visted and in Salt Lake for a little while and we think that we know the city pretty well. It is a nice, clean looking town in a country that is often referred to as “the greatest country”. America certainly is that, we just love to give, we give to OTHER countries, like Biafra and you name it, we give. It’s getting so that wilereee there is a problem, people turn to the American’s and say: “We need your help, please give’, and we usually do. 7 What we “great Americans” often seem to neglect is the need that we face right here in the heart of our own country, we can start with poverty, racial discrimination and so on and on. | Most of us don’t realize that there are people living right in our midst that really can’t afford their daily bread and that there are children that have to go to school hungry and skip lunch too, the sad part about it is, that this is right around the corner from our own neighborhood, We are asked to give to the war orphans all over the world, you can read signs in every magazine, “help a child in any country you wish,” but youll never find an add that reads: child in America helped and there are young people that need our help just as badly. Of ourse there are times when it will seem so useless and there will be times when we will doubt if we are doing any good at all, it’s then that you have to remember the old saying, “Rome wasn’t built in one about these that can’t shell out that kind of money, Well, die come them arises. they are stuck away in some little room with no one to visit them and no one to help or give a damn when the need Perhaps we often realize that where are they? the need is there, but we are afraid to delve into the matter, afraid of what we might find, so rather than trying to overcome this, we stick our head in the sand and wait for a sunnier day. Well, the time has come that makes it necessary to DIVE into the problems of our fellow man, our generation of tomorrow needs the help of today’s generation and so does yesterday's generation, after all, without them there would be no TODAY. If you are wondering what on earth I am trying to get at, let me put it on the line: Central City is trying to form a Volunteer Service to cover every type of help that is needed, we are we need to that they one day can extend a helping hand to others in need. Bemg a Volunteer can be the greatest experience in ones life, and it takes so little, all it really takes is the will to GIVE of ones self and to give freely, it doesn’t matter if you can only give us one hour a week or two and best of all it doesn’t take a great deal of skill, the ingredient is LOVE, only real the love for ones fellow man. We need people to Laos We not only need the manpower we also need the equipment and that Communist supplies and to put it bluntly we NEED YOU to help us get these things, to go knock on the doors, why it has not been ended. with. the conduct and convince cause United States Senator now Cambodia any operating in Thailand, thinking should American WORDPOWER would like to thank those sincere, concerned people who call into our office and aggression is the of this war and the reason give words of encouragement and support for the newspaper. Now we must acknowledge our inability to control the battle, to prop up governments, and to dictate the course of events in Southeast Asia. We have not been defeated. We, of course, could stay in Vietnam forever. We could never be driven out. But it would be futile. As a great nation we must face reality. It is my belief that we became involved in Vietnam for the highest of motives. Our thinking was conditioned largely by events in Korea, where we intervened to halt aggression by a militant neighbor. Painful and costly as it was, we succeeded in Korea and today South Korea prospers and is free. But in Vietnam we tried to stem invasion without success, and we found antigovernment forces everywhere throughout the countryside. (did he say something about subversive????) : , We welcome Hershfield to Mrs. Roberta our staff of contributing editors. She has a long list of journalism and communication credits, and has spent a great deal of time living and working in Washington, D.C. By 1967 my doubts had set in and in January of 1968 I visited South Vietnam where I was caught in the Tet offensive. Under that severecombat situation, I tended to feel primarily the urgency of staying alive, and I returned still unwilling to abandon our military effort. Throughout 1968 and 1969, I have continued to seek information and informed opinion as my apprehension mounted and my conviction solidified. I applauded President Nixon’s announced withdrawal of troops and felt concern only when he qualified his action to a small fraction of our combat forces and reiterated U.S. policy to force the Vietcong and the North Vietnamese to a negotiated settlement. It is my judgment that never will we get a satisfactory settlement—or even any settlement. The Vietcong will never agree. President Nixon should know this. Our only course is to withdraw under conditions of maximum safety for our military personnel. Every day’s delay now brings more casualties and mounting dissent. We must disengage at once. hEL»!
