By 2002, under the direc- regional hospital in the capital of Moldova, where the most ill babies in the country come for care, and where mothers with high risk pregnancies come to deliver. Though hospital and medical staff maintain professional standards, the smallest of the former soviet states struggles to maintain even the most basic services for its citizens. Health care is no exception. The referral hospital supports approximately 3500 births a year, and accepts and treats approximately 2000 infants a year that are delivered and brought to the center from outlying hospitals. The doctors and nurses who participated in the training came from 32 maternity units—one representative from every unit from the entire country attended the intense training course. At the conclusion of the training, Petru Stratulat, chief of Neonatology at the regional hospital stated, “This has been a successful mission as shown by the interest of the participants in both the theoretical and practical parts of the training. Many specialists haven’t done it (resuscitation) correctly in the past, so this training will be very helpful From left to right: Drs. W. Christensen added doctors Susan Puls and Ted Kimball, and R.N. Deb Whipple to the core team to assist with the program. These team leaders organize and travel with additional volunteer doctors, respiratory therapists, and nurses to provide the two-day training to medical staff around the world. On October 6, I was fortunate enough to travel with a team of four doctors and two respiratory therapists, led by Dr. Puls, to Chisinau, Moldova to assist with the training in the former Soviet state. Fifty doctors and nurses from the small economically depressed country spent two days at the Scientific Research Institute of Protection of Mothers and Children, a for them. This group that has been trained will be very helpful for additional doctors, nurses, and students who will now be able to receive the training also. Theoretically, more babies now will avoid incubation because they will have been resuscitated correctly. We welcome you.” A retired physician, Dr. Christensen stated, “Most people have something inside of them—a need to give and to help others. Being a part of this program has allowed me to feel more like a real physician, more than I did during my entire 30 years of private practice. Participating in this program, I feel more like a true healer. Working in this program has been exhausting but exhilarating— something I’ve been compelled to do. I work harder than I ever did in my private practice.” Continuing, Christensen stated, “This Dr. Puls oversees practicum training. Gage Froerer & Assoc. The program is also such a blessing for those who are charged with taking care of newborn babies. It is so satisfying to experience the overwhelming gratitude of the workers. Part of the reward is seeing the look on the faces of birth attendants who had no prior systematic way of doing something to help these babies who suffer distress when they are born.” Dr. Puls related, “I firmly believe the Moldovan doctor receiving certificate after completion of training Neonatal Resuscitation Program is an inspired program. Heavenly Father is concerned about his children all over the world—they are all of an equal nature. This has been proven to me over and over again, as He helps us overcome challenges as we proceed with the program. It is a privilege to be part of it—to watch the program work.” Volunteers who assist with the training travel from all over the United States to participate, often sacrificing their vacation time from work, or missed economic opportunities from taking the time to leave their private medical practice while serving. Great Eden location - $390,000 Moldova is a small nation, about the size of Maryland. It is located northeast of Romania, which shares a border with the country as does Ukraine. Formerly ruled by Romania, Moldova became part of the Soviet Union at the close of World War II. Although independent from the USSR since 1991, Russian forces have remained on Moldovan territory east of the Dniester River, supporting the Slavic majority population, mostly Ukrainians and Russians. Moldova is one of the poorest nations in Europe, and became the first former Soviet state to elect a Communist as its president in 2001. Eighty percent of its population lives below the poverty line. Its infant mortality rate is 41.58 deaths per 1,000 live births. Information taken from the World Factbook 2003.
