Show THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 6 Volume VI, Issue V June 15, 2002 Isn’t Montessori the New Italian Restaurant in Town?! The answer to that question is “No!” — but it is a wonderful education method that has been successfully tried and tested for almost 100 years worldwide. Residents of the Valley will soon have the opportunity to enroll their 3- to 6-year-old children in the new Ogden Valley Montessori School, specialized Montessori materials are used by the children, giving them hands-on experience, which makes abstract concepts easier to understand. In this way, students become independent learners who are actively, rather than passively, engaged in their studies. The goal of Montessori education is to help children develop: located at 5460 E. 2200 N., Eden, next to Eden Park. Amanda Scheuermann of Eden will be the lead teacher and principal of Ogden Valley Montessori with Rebekah Clark-Benavides, of Roy, as her teaching assistant. The school is scheduled to open at the end of August 2002. An elementary program will be added in the future. Montessori schools offer a joyful, creative learning environment where A lifetime love of learning An abiding sense of wonder and curiosity A positive attitude toward school Strong self-confidence and selfesteem The ability to concentrate Initiative and persistence Inner security And a sense of order Ogden Valley Montessori School will offer a rich curriculum of language, math, science, history, geography, botany, zoology, art and music. American Sign Language will also be taught in the first year, with Spanish and French being added later. Maria Montessori, who lived from 1870 to 1952, is the founder of this educational method. She was the first woman in Italy to attend medical school, and the first female Doctor of Medicine there. Through her work with children with disabilities, and socially deprived children, she developed her unique educational method known as the Montessori method. As a result of her further study, observation and experimentation, she found the principles of her method to be applicable to all children. Her efforts have had 8588 East 100 South Huntsville UT an impact on the field of education in general, and the way we teach and understand children today. The Montessori method of educa- tion is both a philosophy of child development and a rationale for guiding such growth. It is based on the child’s need for freedom within limits, as well as a carefully prepared classroom environment. The curriculum, under the direction of a trained Montessori teacher, allows the child to experience the joy of learning, the time to enjoy the process, and ensures the development of self-esteem. Extensive training is required for a full Montessori credential, including a minimum of a college degree, and a year’s student teaching under supervision. The Montessori teacher functions as a resource person, role model, demonstrator, record-keeper and meticulous observer of each child’s behavior and growth. She ‘directs’ learning, although self directed learning takes place. Most teaching is done one-on-one or in small groups. The main premises of Montessori education are: Children should be respected as being inherently different from adults Children are individuals who differ from each other The young child possesses an unusual sensitivity and intellectual ability to absorb and learn from his environment somewhat like a “sponge” The most important years of a child’s growth are the first six years of life, when unconscious learning is gradually brought to the conscious level. The primary goal of Montessori education is to help each child reach their full potential in all areas of life. It is designed to take full advantage of the child’s natural desire to learn, and their unique ability to develop their own capabilities. The whole learning environment—classroom, materials, and atmosphere—is supportive of the child. Dr. Montessori’s observations of the kinds of things which children enjoy and go back to repeatedly, led her to design a number of multi-sensory, sequential, and self correcting materials to make learning easy and enjoyable.
