Show Volume III, Issue VIII THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 7 February 15, 2001 Jazz News By Jen Beasley Student Reporter The second longest running coach in professional sports is extending his career. Head Coach Jerry Sloan signed a contract extension, which will keep him here in Utah with the Jazz until 2004. And he couldn’t be happier. Flashing a rare smile to the media during his press conference on February 2, Sloan said, “I don’t know where I’d rather be.” In terms of coaching longevity with one team, Jerry is second only to Minnesota Twins manager Tom Kelly. He attributes his long career to the Jazz management. “This organization has been very stable.” “Larry (Miller) and everyone in the front office make decisions on what’s best for the franchise. That’s one of the things I appreciated when I first came here.” He also credits John Stockton and Karl Malone, saying, “Having two great players hasn’t hurt anything either. And they haven’t run me off.” It seems that nobody is really looking to run off the 11th winningest coach in NBA history. Larry Miller has commented that, as long as Sloan wants the job, he can have it. And as far as Jerry Sloan is concerned, the only thing that could coax him into retirement is his health or that of his wife Bobbi’s, who has been battling breast cancer. Sloan said, “The last couple years were pretty tough on our family. We’ve gone through some tough times but we worked those things out.” In life, as in basketball, tough times come. But it’s nice to know that the Utah Jazz have at least three more years of Jerry Sloan on the sidelines, helping them pull through as he always has. Fast Break 01/25/01- The Jazz came into the game vs. Denver with the mindset that they could phone in the victory. Proven wrong by the 13-point deficit in the third quarter, the Jazz sprung to life and took the lead by two with 1:01 left to go in the game. With 1.8 seconds left, John Stockton missed a would-be game-winning layup, and Denver rebounded. Wishing to push the ball to half-court, Nick Van Exel took a timeout. Unfortunately for the Nuggets, they were out of timeouts, resulting in a technical foul. Van Exel then argued the call and was hit with another T. With the game on the line, John Stockton stepped up and made both free throws, and the Jazz pulled it out 98-96. 01/27/01- In a poor effort vs. San Antonio, the Jazz shot just 19 percent from the field in the first quarter, putting them in a hole that proved to be impossible to climb out of. With the slow start and a monster 33 points from the Spurs’ Tim Duncan, the Jazz lost 99-86, putting the season series with their division rivals totally to the Spurs’ advantage, 3-0. 01/30/01- Despite a ruptured tendon in his right foot, Nick Van Exel refused to take a “timeout” in this key division rematch, posting 21 points, 8 assists and 7 boards. It was not enough however, as the Jazz beat the Nuggets 9791. 02/01/01- A horribly executed game vs. Charlotte ended with an 87-76 win for the Jazz despite shooting only 41 percent from the field, and Olden Polynice taking the team high with 13 shots. 02/03/01- The Jazz squared off against one of their biggest rivals, the Seattle Supersonics, but not Gary Payton. The Glove sat the game out with a strained abdomen, forcing the rest of Seattle’s relatively young crew to try to hold off the Jazz. They proved unsuccessful as Karl Malone hit a perfect 12-12 from the field and missed only one free throw. The Jazz won 111-91, but after the game, the Mailman dwelled on the single miss from the charity stripe, stating that the day he was truly perfect with no misses and no turnovers, he’d retire.
