Show Volume II, Issue XVII THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 13 1 September 2000 Sports News Committee Being Organized in Effort to Bring Football Program to Snowcrest Ogden Valley Community members are forming a committee to organize efforts to put together a formal proposal to submit to Weber County Schools for a football program at Snowcrest Junior High School. The first official meeting of this committee will be held September 14, at 7:30 p.m. at Snowcrest Jr. High. Interested community members are being encouraged to attend the first committee meeting to voice their support and share their opinions. Snowcrest Junior High School Principle Mr. Stillwell will have to approve the committee’s initial proposal, which he will then submit to the Weber School District. Mr. Stillwell has agreed to meet with committee and interested community members on September 21 at 7:30 p.m. at the Junior High in Eden. The agenda for the September 14 committee meeting will be as follows: Election of an executive board to head up the committee. Assignment of areas of responsibility to members of the board. Define the purpose of the committee and long-term role of support to Snowcrest athletics. Define areas of future research— How many boys will commit to playing Jr. High football next year? What will the start up and ongoing cost be? How much funding can the community raise for the Snowcrest team? Injuries—prevention and frequency. How long does football equipment last, and compilation of replacement schedule. Coaching staff, volunteers and partnering with school administrative staff. Community relations. Other Recently those spearheading the effort to bring football to Snowcrest contacted Lex Puffer, Weber County School District Administrator in charge of athletics and funding, notifying him of the community’s desire to bring football to Snowcrest by the 2001 – 2002 school year. In a recreational football Parent’s Meeting recently held, all but two of the parents, of the 80 children partici- pating in the football program, supported the idea of bringing a football program to Snowcrest. According to Morrie Mau, recreational football coach and co-organizer of the effort, “One of the main differences from School Athletics and Recreational Leagues is that of the boy’s friends and peers attending games rather than only family members. At the Jr. High level, this is a big part of the overall experience, both for the boys and the other students.” Mr. Mau also states that, “The Ogden Valley Football League has doubled in size and has more than 80 boys playing on four different teams this year. There are approximately 36 boys that could play football this year for Snowcrest, that Ogden Valley Football is currently aware of.” Currently Snowcrest 9th graders are allowed to play football for Weber High since there is not a Jr. High team. For students interested in being part of Weber’s team, realistically, it is necessary for students to participate in the high school’s program during their 9th grade year to remain competitive with other Jr. High players who already have football programs at their schools. This puts added stress on families living in Ogden Valley that have to arrange rides nearly every day for their students playing at Weber. Having a Snowcrest team would eliminate this hardship. One of the main concerns voiced in the Parent Meeting recently held— ”how do we find and retain a good, qualified coach for the local Jr. High team?” Parents seemed to agree that if there were a poor or under qualified coach, they would not support a local team. Organizers are seeking an accurate count of 7th and 8th grade boys who will try out for football next year at Snowcrest. “We will develop two petitions, one for general support and the other for specific boys who will try out next year.” For more information, or to voice your support, please contact Morrie Mau at 745-3230, Dave Griffin at 745-6695, Vern Hart at 745-6869, or Dave Wadman at 745-2574.
