CFOV ESSAY CONTEST SUBMISSION FORM 2021 “Giving Back to My Hometown – Live Here, Play Here, Give Here” Name: ____________________________________________ Grade: ________ Address: __________________________________________________________ Valley Elementary Students Recognized for Their Winning Artwork Two Valley Elementary students, Gunner Blakely - 5th Grade; and Berrett Stapp - 2nd Grade, were honored Tuesday morning March 30 with a visit from Waldo the Weber State Wildcat to celebrate their winning art submissions for the Walker Institute of Politics and Public Service “Elementary School Presidential Art Competition.” Waldo brought along his human companions Becky Stromberg, Administrative Specialist and Intern Coordinator for the Institute; and Devin Wiser, Executive Director of Government Relations and Olene S. Walker Institute, as well as some excellent “Weber State University Swag Bags” and certificates for both winners. The contest asked students to create an art piece that “Celebrates an American President.” Berrett Stapp is a second grader. In class, he enjoyed learning about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. The painting was a profile of our first president. Berrett says that the Revolutionary War was so important so that we could become our own country and George Washington was a General in the army who never gave up. The subject of Gunner Blakely’s piece was also George Washington, whom he is currently studying in a United States Government Unit in 5th Grade American History but portrayed with a more modernized vision. When asked to elaborate about his artwork and process, Gunner stated, “I like to have a lot of creative freedom when I’m drawing, so I don’t like to have to draw in a certain way or a certain style. When I looked at this contest, I didn’t want to draw just George Washington. I wanted to draw an updat- DOLLAR A HEAD cont. from page 3 U.S. cattle producers across America are losing their ranches, homes, and livelihoods. American consumers are eating beef imported from 22 different countries, all labeled “Product of USA.” According to the USDA Economic Research Service, consumer beef prices in January 2020 are at the same highs as they were in 2015, but the disparity between the cattle prices and the end prices is the greatest they have ever been since 2009. This disparity in cost vs. price is absorbed and enjoyed by the meat packers and importers. In essence, U.S. cattle producers and U.S. consumers are paying to have U.S. beef eliminated from the market. U.S. cattle producers, whether they have one cow or 1,000, are forced to pay into a system that works against them. The Beef Checkoff program no longer supports, nor represents, the interests of independent cattle producers. A Solution - Organizations such as the OCM and R-CALF USA have been objecting to illegal and unethical maneuvers related to the Beef Checkoff program for years. They are fighting the U.S. government and special interests who have hundreds of millions of U.S. taxpayer dol- ed version with events that have been happening and that are happening right now. It reflects how I’m feeling about this world with COVID rules that can be uncomfortable at times.” We are very proud of these two gifted boys and all our amazing students here. Great things are always happening at Valley Elementary with talented students, dedicated teachers and staff, and such a supportive community! Thank you to the Weber State Walker Institute for providing this opportunity for our students to share their artistic abilities and allowing their political sensibilities to shine! lars that they use to defend themselves. As the legal battles drag on, more ranchers and farmers are forced to leave the cattle industry. The only way for U.S. cattle producers to make their voices heard regarding the archaic and corrupt Beef Checkoff program is to bring it to a vote. The Beef Act requires a representative group comprising 10 percent or more of the number of cattle producers to petition the Secretary of Agriculture for a referendum. The 2017 Census of Agriculture estimates that there were 882,692 farms with cattle and calves in the United States, therefore, 88,269 valid signatures are needed to call a vote on the Beef Checkoff program. An interstate coalition of cattle industry groups and individuals have started a petition at https://checkoffvote.com/checkoff-votedetails/ to collect the signatures needed. Any cattle producer, regardless of age who has owned, sold, or purchased cattle from July 2, 2020 through July 1, 2021 is eligible to sign the petition. You can also download a print version of the petition to circulate. Note: References available on request.
