Show Volume XXVIII Issue VI The Ogden Valley News Page 7 February 1, 2021 Announcements Obituaries Sheldon “Riley” Leroy Summers September 6, 1941 ~ January 20, 2021 Sheldon Summers, also known as Riley, passed away Wednesday, January 20, 2021 at his home in Pleasant View, Sheldon Summers Utah surrounded by his family and those who loved him. He was 79 years old. Riley was born in Tremonton, Utah September 6, 1941 to Merlin and Hazel (Johnson) Summers. He was raised on his family’s farm in Bothwell where they raised sugar beets and wheat, and raised and milked dairy cattle. He was the typical farm kid—busy from sunup to sundown. This work ethic served him well his entire life through school, mission, college athletics, and his career as a coach and educator. Riley graduated from Bear River High School where he lettered in track and field, wrestling, and football. He held the state of Utah shot put and discus record for 20 years until it was retired in 1979. He attended Utah State University on a Full-ride scholarship for track and field, and played center position for the football team for two seasons. In 1961 he left college to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in what was then called The Great Lakes Mission—an area covering Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, and Indiana. He served two full years and returned home to Utah and USU where he majored in Secondary Education/Physical Education and Sociology. This is where he honed his knowledge and love of history. He also was an active member of the Sigma Chi fraternity and kept in contact with many of his fraternity brothers throughout his life. It was in 1968 he was set up on a blind date with his sweetheart Kathleen Timothy on New Year’s Eve, and they were together from that day on for 52 years. Each of them graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in education and spent the next few years moving to Brigham, Vernal, and eventually settling in the Ogden area and calling Weber County home. Being a football, wrestling, and track and field coach allowed Riley to teach diverse ages NORDIC VALLEY cont. from page 1 plans to hold a grand opening at a later date, when more terrain is open to ride. Nordic Valley offers beginner, intermediate, and advanced terrain for skiing of young adults. He taught at Mt. Ogden Junior High, Highland Junior High, Snowcrest Junior High, and Roy High and retired from Weber High in 1998. At Roy and Weber, he taught U.S. History, American Government, Sociology, PE and Mock Trial. Wherever he taught, he put his whole heart into what he was doing to give the kids the best experience and education they could have. He genuinely loved his job. It was while coaching football at Roy and Weber that they won the state football title—Roy in 1981 and Weber in 1985. He had many wrestlers win state titles while being the head wrestling coach at Roy. He respected the sports and players and made sure they knew that. After retirement, Riley and Kathy traveled in their RV and were able to see many beautiful places and made sure their dog Bandit was in the co-pilot seat. They often traveled to the Midwest to visit their daughter Shelly and their three grandchildren, whom they adored. They were able to live in South Dakota for a short time and spent many days with their granddaughter Grace tending her. This was truly one of the highlights of Riley’s life. He did not grow up with grandparents, so he was learning along with his grandchildren what this new relationship was all about. Being a grandpa was a joy to him and he did it well. As time went on, he was grateful for the contact and relationships he had with other coaches. His daily phone calls to and from his brother Randy in New Mexico, visits from friends, and watching football were a godsend when getting out was hard. He appreciated the time, friendship, and efforts of others. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Summers (Timothy), daughter Shelly Mathis (Summers), sister Shanna Davenport (Summers), brother Randy Summers, granddaughter Katelyn Dudley (Mathis), grandson Sam Mathis and granddaughter Grace Mathis. He has one great-grandchild and one on the way, along with several nieces and nephews. Keith Emil Hanson March 9, 1960 ~ January 21, 2021 Keith Emil Hanson, 60, of Ogden, Utah passed away January 21, 2021 at home. He was born March 9, 1960 in Keith Hanson Ogden, the third of six children, to Emil and Joanne Hanson. He was raised in North Ogden, Nordic Valley, and Uintah Highlands. He was a happy-go-lucky child and loved roaming the hills surrounding his childhood homes. After attending the school of hard knocks, he graduated, eventually achieving 27 years of sobriety. He completed his GED, served in the Air Force Reserves, and then attended Weber State University and Ogden Technical College. Keith was an entrepreneur and a great salesman. He owned a carpet cleaning business, a real estate business, and spent his last several years as a business broker with Business Resource Center of Salt Lake City. He served in the LDS Branch Presidency at Wide Horizons Intermediate Care, where he loved and was loved by many special people. In 2007, he was a recipient of a liver donated by a special soul, Nathan. In 2018, Keith was diagnosed with throat cancer, which he fought with natural remedies. On Father’s Day in 2020 he was then diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. Despite radiation, chemotherapy, and the latest treatments, the cancer continued to grow, eventually taking him from us. He loved doing all he could for the Organ Donor Connect Services, even competing annually in their Olympics. Because he wanted to give back even after death, he chose to donate his body to the University of Utah for medical research. Keith never let setbacks get him down or challenges slow him down; he always bounced back with optimism for the future. His diligence in fulfilling his callings and faith in his Savior were known to all. Keith is survived by his wife Teresa VanSweden Hanson; his mother, Joanne Hanson; his stepchildren, Amy (Jason) Huff and Jacob (Jenna Gilbertson) Price; four most precious grandchildren, Aleia, Corver, Payton and Blakey; his siblings, Joy (Brett) Shelton, Grant (Kammy), and Larry (Lisa) Hanson; sister-in-law Cindy; many beloved nieces and nephews; and his mother-in-law, Portia VanSweden. He was preceded in death by his father, Emil; his brothers Brian and Brad; and his father-in-law Lee VanSweden. Many thanks to the doctors and nurses who took such great care of Keith, especially Applegate Hospice, and many neighbors and friends who brought meals, gave blessings, and served him in so many other ways. A memorial service for Keith was held Wednesday, January 27 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints at 1608 E. 1300 S. (13th & Fillmore) in Ogden, Utah. Because he donated his body, there will be no viewing. At a future time, his remains will be interred at Lindquist’s Memorial Gardens of The Wasatch.
