The Angle Tree is a holiday giving tree that, through private donations, provides assistance to children and families within our school boundaries who need assistance during the holidays. This year, Valley Elementary is also partnering with Community Christmas. Their all-volunteer event, Community Christmas, strives to provide gifts and other winter essentials to approximately 2,500 local children in need who are not receiving holiday assistance. Children from Weber, Davis, and Box Elder Counties will benefit from the donations. Community Christmas is sponsored by Ogden-Weber Community Action Partnership and the Ogden School District. OWCAP’s mission is to diminish the effects of poverty in Weber County through education, individualized support, advocacy, and collaboration. All proceeds for the event go directly to the event—no money is used for other services. Every dime raised for Community Christmas is used for the event goals and the families served. If you would like more information, visit <https://www.communitychristmasut.org/> Along with in-kind donations, Community Christmas is also taking cash donations, and need volunteers. Valley Elementary will provide a drop-off location for Community Christmas. Singer/Songwriter Suffers Injuries in Eden Accident By Shanna Francis On Monday, October 26, around 4:30 p.m., an accident occurred on Wolf Creek Drive, just east of the Wolf Creek barn in Eden. The driver and passenger were transported by ambulance to an area hospital for observation, but were released later that evening. The driver of the car (a 2006 Ford GT)— singer, songwriter, and music producer Andy Chase of New York, New York—was driving down to the Valley Market with his friend Jesse Nelson when he tried to pass another car. According to an accident report from the Weber County Sheriff’s office, the driver was “speeding too fast for existing conditions.” The passing speed noted on the report was 55 mph—about 10 mph above the posted speed limit. According to Josh Stoddard, Chase’s business manager and publicist, the Ford GT was fitted with high-performance tires designed to be November 4, 2020 - In consultation with officials at the WeberMorgan Health Department, Weber High School will move to online instruction for the next two weeks. This action is in response to an outbreak of COVID-19 at the school. Currently, 15 or more individuals connected to the school have tested positive for COVID-19 within the past two weeks, and multiple classrooms have been affected. According to the Utah Department of Health’s School Manual, an outbreak is defined when, “15 people tested positive for COVID19 across multiple settings in the school (more than one classroom) and are connected by the same time period…” For example, “15 students and teachers in different classes in the school test positive within two weeks of each other.” Individuals who test positive must isolate and anyone exposed will be instructed to quarantine for 14 days. The soft closure began Thursday, November 5 and will run until Wednesday, November 18, with students scheduled to return to class Thursday, November 19. During this time, the Huntsville Man Shot in Valley Incident According to the Weber County Sheriff’s office, on October 23, 2020, around 10:40 p.m., Weber Area Dispatch received a 911 call regarding a man with a gun in Huntsville. The male subject was seen by the homeowner, attempting to break into a trailer parked in front of the house. The subject also fired several shots during this time. Deputies from the Weber County Sheriff’s Office responded, along with a Deputy from Morgan County Sheriff’s Office. When deputies arrived on the scene, the subject, who was armed, confronted them. The used at ambient air temperatures no colder than 50 degrees. When temperatures drop below this threshold, tire surfaces begin to harden, taking on the quality of hard, smooth plastic. Since the temperatures were only in the 30s that day, as the car took the curve, the rear tires fishtailed on the smooth road, and skidded almost immediately. The car, sliding sideways, hit the unpaved edge of the road “where it caught grip again, and shot off the side of the road with the brakes on…. Unfortunately, there was a 7-foot drop, which is why the car launched, tilted, landed on its side, and then rolled onto its back about 20 feet from the road.” Rumors going around put the speed of the car at about 100 mph, which would have launched the car “a hundred yards of more, way out into the field after rolling many, many By Shanna Francis times,” Stoddard added. Short-term rentals are defined as rentals of residential dwelling units (single-family and multi-family), usually for periods of less than a month. Short-term rentals are commonly booked through one of many online marketplaces, such as Airbnb, VRBO, etc; or local property managers. Currently, short-term rentals, or STRs, in Ogden Valley are allowed in DRR-1 (Destination Resort & Recreation) and FR-3 (Forest Residential, 3-acre minimum lot size) zones, but require a conditional use permit by meeting limited requirements such as adequate parking. One of her current projects is part of Utah’s Catholic history. “I was asked to restore the statue at the Old Huntsville Trappist monastery cemetery. It is an historic statue,” she said referring to a Marian statue that was placed 70 years ago to watch over the three dozen Trappist monks who were laid to rest in the cemetery of the now-closed Our Lady of the Holy Trinity Abbey. The Huntsville monastery opened in 1947; the final Sunday Mass there was celebrated by the monks on August 27, 2017. The monastery’s land was sold to Bill White, who, according to Holt, wants to preserve the monks’ legacy. White called on Holt to restore and weatherproof the 70-year-old statue, which is an image of Mary, Protector of the Faith. The passing years had not been kind to the statue. “Her hands were rotted, so we had the statue Solene Songer |
