Ivan Quist March 3, 1930 ~ June 20, 2019 The sun went down in many hearts as they learned of the passing of Ivan Quist. He lived a very extraordinary life, in seemingly ordinary surroundings. Ivan was born March 3, 1930 son of S. Ivan Quist C. Ivan and Cleo Cornia Quist. He passed away at home from congestive heart failure on June 20, 2019, at age 89. Ivan was born in Ogden, Utah, and grew up with a sharp wit and sense of adventure. He attended Weber High School and received Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from Utah State University. He married LaVoie Ozmun on April 12, 1949 and their marriage was later solemnized in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Logan Temple. They lived a love story for 70 years. She taught elementary school for 30 years in Weber School District at Valley Elementary, Roosevelt Elementary, and Midland Elementary before retiring in 1999. Later in her life she was briefly married to Terry Tanovich, but divorced. Mom loved jewelry, art, astrology, chocolate, Coke, reading, and cats, and had a spunky personality. She also had a special knack for organization. The family would like to thank the staff of Barrington Place and Comfort Worx Hospice for their compassion and care during Mom’s illness. She is survived by her sons, Gregory Morris (Dennise) of Clinton and Matthew Morris (Leeann) of Logan and her daughter Melanie Stokes (Doug) of Syracuse. Condolences may be sent to the family at <www.leavittsmortuary.com> Ivan raised and rode beautiful Arabian horses, trained, participated in, and won endurance races. He sat a horse like it was part of him. We won’t soon forget the picture in our minds of him walking down the road in his bathing suit, white terry robe, cowboy boots and hat-leading a horse down for a swim. He was a true cowboy. Ivan tooled countless leather pieces through the years; they are treasured by their many recipients. He played sports with a vengeance; basketball with his “lunch bunch” team was part of life for over 20 years. Never did he miss an opportunity to serve, financially and emotionally. Perhaps his greatest legacy is the lives he touched and changed. He helped us all reach for the stars. He believed in us until we too believed. Ivan is survived by his three siblings, LuAnn Slater, Edna Porter, and Larry Quist; five children, Farley (Judy) Quist, Liberty; Debbie (Allen) Melle, Huntsville; Jeanette (Mark) Goodson, Huntsville; Rob (Heather) Quist, Japan; and Jeff (Melissa) Quist, Syracuse; two “adopted” children, Helena (Rich) Carapellatti, Arizona; and Tammy (Rob) Will, Draper. Throughout these years, he spent countless hours on his horse moving cattle, building fences and making sure ranch operations ran smoothly. The cabin and ranch were his sanctuary. Together Ike and Janine raised three daughters: Ashley, Alison and Sammi. It’s often said a true man is one that raises girls. Dad was a true man. He was a dedicated father who never missed a game or performance. Not only was he there, but he actively coached from the sidelines. Everyone knew how much he loved his girls. He loved visiting, especially when it came to discussing Utah Utes Basketball or his grandkids. His young grandkids enjoyed following him around the yard, providing him with lots of entertainment. He was a man of few words who let his actions show his true character—selfless and generous. Quietly, he made a huge impact on many people’s lives. There are heroes, and there are legends; heroes get remembered, but legends never die. Ike Swan was a legend. We will miss him dearly.
