General of Social Security, Gail S. Ennis, is warning the public about a new variation of increasingly common government employee impersonation scams, this time involving the Social Security Advisory Board. The Advisory Board has reported that individuals are receiving scam phone calls displaying the board’s phone number on caller ID. The callers are reportedly attempting to obtain personal information, including Social Security numbers. If you receive this type of call, you should not engage with the caller or provide personal information or money in response to requests or threats. These callers are employing tactics similar to impersonation schemes involving the IRS, SSA, and the SSA OIG. Inspector General Ennis advises that callers may use a variety of false scenarios or threats to obtain personal information or payments, often requested through gift cards or prepaid debit cards. However, the Social Security Advisory Board typically does not contact the general public to request personal information over the phone. Moreover, government employees will never threaten you to obtain personal information or payments. In those cases, the call is fraudulent, and you should just hang up. Mark thought he knew his family history, at least the significant parts. He’d heard lots of stories growing up. He had shared life-long interactions with aunts, uncles and cousins, but when he stumbled across a record indicating his mother had been born on an Indian reserve (reservation) in northern British Columbia, he thought there was some mistake. He’d actually just discovered the first clue to his family’s greatest secret. Yes, Nanna Perkins had indeed been born on a reservation, but why did no one know or talk about it? Because that’s the way Nanna wanted it. Mark and his siblings were Metis—half bloods, equal parts European and native indigenous. The Metis people emerged out of the North American Fur Trade, brought about by the marriage of a European descended trapper and an his Indian wife. These marriages became the strategic norm and wide spread across the continent during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries of of the motorcycle he was driving as he took a curve. The 28-year-old female driver of the vehicle found when emergency personnel arrived. The Sheriff’s office then proceeded to have Search and Rescue check and clear the vehicle of any other occupants before having it removed from the rushing water. Non-native, Invasive Plant in Ogden Valley Threatens Viability of Pineview Reservoir A non-native grass, phragmites, is an invasive perennial that now thrives in much of the wetlands around the Great Salt Lake, Utah Lake and other marshes in northern Utah. It grows in dense stands and normally reaches 5 to 10 feet in height. If the conditions are right it can reach 18 feet. Compared to other shoreline plants, phragmites are really good at taking over habitat; spreading by both rhizomes and wind-blown seeds. This enables the plant to spread up to 20 feet per year. A cooperative weed management group in Northern Utah encompasses Ogden Valley and has worked on several projects over the last ten years. Recently a member of the Weber Conservation District spotted a few areas of phragmites growing in the Valley. As a result, members of the weed management group surveyed and mapped a number of places the weed is growing in Huntsville, Eden and along state and county roads. What would Ogden Valley be without Pineview Reservoir? If phragmites were to invade the reservoir, it would be devastating. The weed quickly overcomes shorelines, making access impossible. Around the Great Salt Lake the patches of grass are so dense that wetland managers are called out each year to Member of Weber County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue is lowered down to car in Ogden River where he found a trapped dog.
