Show Volume XXV Issue XIII The Ogden Valley news Page 5 May 15, 2019 Valley Elementary Teacher Retiring: Open house planned for May 15 It’s a bittersweet time for us all; our beloved teacher, colleague, and friend, Mrs. Carolyn Hogge, is retiring this year from her 6thgrade teaching position at Valley Elementary School in Eden. As of May 24, she’ll be trading in her class at school to have more time with her husband, her own children, and 21 grandchildren! Hmmm… does that sound like “less busy?” Come join us Wednesday, May 15 for a fun evening as we express our appreciation for her 24 years of dedicated service teaching. Meet at Valley Elementary’s school gym from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. We look forward to commemorating Mrs. Hogge’s great job here at Valley, and wish her all the best in her future endeavors. Pictured left is Mrs. Carolyn Hogge. YMCA to Honor Joe McQueen and Mayor Brent Taylor at Annual Charity Breakfast The YMCA of Northern Utah will hold its 2019 OgdenAwards Breakfast Wednesday, June 5 at the Eccles Conference Center in downtown Ogden. Doors open at 7:30 a.m. and the program starts at 8:00 a.m. Titled “A Benefit for Kids to Reach the Stars,” the Ogden Awards Breakfast will raise funds for needs based scholarships that will allow children from low-income families in Weber County access to preschool, after school, and summer educational programs. The YMCA of Northern Utah operates 7 preschools sites, 28 after school program sites, 10 summer day camp sites, and 2 overnight residential summer camps which serve over 3,500 children annually in our region. These provide children with high quality education, character development, and skills which will prepare them to succeed in life. Over 75% of children in the Y’s programs come from low-income families and the Y distributes over $1.7 million in needs based scholarships annually to ensure that every child is able to access these critical programs. Every year at the Ogden Awards Breakfast the Y honors community partners and leaders who make its work possible and who represent the values which the Y stands for: Youth Development, Healthy Living, and Social Responsibility. This year the Y is truly honored to include among its honorees jazz legend Joe McQueen and Mayor Brent Taylor, in memoriam. McQueen will receive the Community Pillar Award for his contributions to Ogden through music, racial tolerance and service to youth and the elderly. Taylor will be honored with the Spirit of Social Responsibility Award for his legacy of service and his efforts to instill the values of service and civic engagement in the youth of North Ogden. We are grateful to Joe McQueen and Jennie Taylor, and all of our partners and sponsors who have lent their names, funds, and energies to making the Ogden Awards Breakfast a success for the Y, the families and children we serve, and ultimately for our communities.” For more information, visit ymcautah.org/ ogdenbreakfast or call 801-839-3410.
