Kelson recognized for its commitment to an academically challenging, international education. Tristen earned a First Place NASA award for her project in the category of Microbiology at the Richey Science and Engineering Fair held at Weber State University in Ogden on March 24, 2017. Tristen then continued to compete at the INTEL Science and Engineering Fair this year held in Los Angeles, California, May 20 thru May 25. Her placement research was titled “Kimchi Bacterial Effects against Common Sinusitis Bacteria.” Millions of students worldwide compete each year in local school-sponsored science fairs; the winners of these events go on to participate in Society-affiliated regional and state fairs from which the best win the opportunity to attend Intel ISEF. Intel ISEF unites these top young scientific minds, showcasing their talents on an international stage where doctoral level scientists review and judge their work. INTEL Science and Engineering Fair is the world’s largest international pre-college science competition. This year the competition featured nearly 1,800 young scientists selected from 425 affiliate fairs in 78 countries, regions, and territories. While Tristen was at the ISEF competition, she shared her ideas with students and judges from around the world who also attended ISEF. Students selected this year to compete at ISEF and achieve recognition for their knowledge and projects were given the rare opportunity of going on a dedicated tour of the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Los Angeles. Tristen’s mother stated, “This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, which required a background check for each student attending, prior to arriving in California for the competition. Students were given tours of the operation control room and several other levels of the NASA laboratory. “While competing at INTEL ISEF, in both 2016 and 2017, Tristen has made many friends from around the world, including England, Ireland, Portugal, Australia, Italy, Luxembourg, South Africa, Moldova and Russia. She also recently vacationed in Portugal with her father and visited one of the students she met while competing last year at ISEF 2016.” Tristen’s educational goals, both immediate and long-term, include graduating from an Ivy League College with her Doctorate of Medicine (MD), continuing with her residency in Orthopedic Surgery. To date, Tristen has visited several Ivy League campuses in the U.S. that are of interest to her. Tristen’s parents added, “She has had teachers at Valley Elementary School who will always be remembered by her due to their exceptional teaching skills and the educational impact they made when she was in their class—Mrs. Pat Fuller, Mrs. Kathy Anderson, Mrs. Facer, Mrs. Frost and Ms. Stocker. Tristen attended Valley Elementary School through her 4th grade year, at which point she was accepted into the Program for Accelerated Learning (PAL) up through her 6th grade year. She then attended and graduated from Snowcrest Junior High, with many exceptional teachers (too many to mention)! “Tristen left Eden with an outstanding primary and middle school education, which gave her an exceptional academic ‘solid foundation,’ contributing to her ability to earn such prestigious opportunities as competing at INTEL ISEF, as well as successfully completing her first year in the International Baccalaureate Program (with straight A’s) and currently being ranked second in her 2018 graduating class. We would like to offer a very sincere thank you to her many teachers; you are truly exceptional in your careers and will be remembered for a lifetime!” Tristen’s summer plans include studying, water skiing, biking, hiking and spending time with her family and friends. She will also spend one month in Europe this summer. Tristen is the daughter of Ross and Patricia Kelson of Eden. Patricia adds, “Tristen enjoyed learning from a very young age. When she entered kindergarten she was definitely an overachiever and began to show signs of leadership. Today Tristen is goal-oriented, selfdisciplined, committed, and enthusiastic about life. She manages her time well enough to still have fun with her family and friends. I am very proud to be her mother.” Tire Change Service Off Bike = Same Day / On Bike = Next Day with an overall record of 15-3. The 2017 Championship represents back-to-back Region 1 Champions.
