On Friday, March 3, from noon to 3:00 p.m., they are hosting their annual Winter Race Day at Snowbasin Resort for athletes with disabilities. Athletes will have the opportunity to compete in a slalom race and ride through the terrain park on Little Cat run. Cost is free to participants through fundraising efforts and donations, and all participating athletes will receive a trophy. Weber Reads Presents Transcending: The Wat Misaka Story (NR) Film Showing - Wed., Mar. 15 @ 7:00 p.m. After growing up in a barber shop on Ogden’s 25th street, Wataru “Wat” Misaka shot his way to basketball stardom with the University of Utah. As a first-round draft pick for the 1947 New York Knicks, Wat became the first nonwhite professional basketball player. Having been born in Utah, he was not subject to the 1942 internment orders. To the thousands of Japanese Americans interned, this small town son breaking race barriers became a symbol of hope. This documentary explores Wat’s bas- Opera, will make the introductions, and Dr. Carol Anderson, Principal Coach, will detail the story line. Principal singers from this production Nicole Haslett (Lucia), James Westman (Enrico), and Mackenzie Whitney (Edgardo) will sing selections from the opera to the delight of all present at this symposium! This event will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church Social Center (1050 E. 5600 S. in S. Ogden). The social time for the symposium will begin at 5:30 p.m.; the music will follow and a light supper will wrap up the evening. Ogden Nature Center Call for Entries: It’s time to build birdhouses! • Size limitations: The base of the birdhouse may not exceed 24” square. The height of the actual birdhouse (not including the post) may not exceed 36” tall. • All birdhouses must be freestanding on their own post and ready for installation outdoors. Birdhouses that are not freestanding will not be accepted for the exhibit. You must perch your birdhouse atop a sturdy post or attach a strong hanger. Posts will be installed at a depth of 1-2 feet, so plan for that extra footage that gets buried in the ground. • The Nature Center encourages the use of natural, reclaimed, and recycled materials. Please consider the environment when choosing your materials and finishes. Please, no propane tanks this year. • Please build sturdy birdhouses. Birdhouses need to last through all seasons outdoors. • The judges will select which birdhouses are accepted into the 2017 exhibit. A limited number of entries will be accepted for the exhibit. • The Ogden Nature Center reserves the right to refuse submissions. About the 2017 Judges • Debra Muller is the Assistant Director of the Eccles Art Center in Ogden, Utah. She is responsible for organizing exhibits, educational programs and special events. • Arlo Wing is Assistant Wetlands Manager of the Salt Creek PSG, managing habitat improvement and water and facilities management. • Amber Hansen is an award-winning fine artist residing in Pleasant View, Utah. Her work hangs in private collections throughout the U.S. In addition to a career as an artist, she has spent the last eight years as a wildlife rehabilitation volunteer.
