Calling All Barns: The Ogden Valley Dark Sky Mural Trail If you have a barn visible to the public in Ogden Valley and would like a dark sky mural, please let Ogden Valley Starry Nights know. Working with talented local artist Jake Songer, we are in the process of planning and raising funds for a trail of murals in Ogden Valley that will celebrate our dark skies through wildlife constellations. You may not be aware that there is a constellation for almost every form of wildlife represented in our high mountain valley. The skies have always been seen through a cultural prism. Laplanders see elk and moose in the stars above. Shoshone see mountain goats. Even the Greek crane constellation can be interpreted as a sandhill crane. The Scottish school children won a global competition several years ago to designate a new constellation: “wee sleekit beastie” (Robert Burns poem To A Mouse), emerged from hundreds of entries. W h a t does a chain of murals do for Ogden Valley and its residents? The dark sky mural trail will celebrate the Valley’s significance as a place of remarkable scenic beauty; a place that was the first in the state of Utah to preserve its dark skies; a place with a long agricultural heritage that brought into being beautiful barns, many of which are now faded and textured by years of sun and snow. The right public art lightens the heart and energizes the creative impulse; let’s try to do that here. What if you don’t have a barn but do have a big, beautiful exterior surface visible to the public? Please identify yourself, or your organization, as interested, and let’s talk.
