By Collin Toliver, Sixth-grade student reporter Valley Elementary’s Sixth Graders Clean “UP” Community Pathway By Bryn Farley & Hunter Udy, Sixth-grade student reporters On September 5, Valley Elementary’s sixth-graders were “UP” for adventure at the Pineview West Trail. Valley Elementary’s sixth graders have adopted the trail to fix and clean it, and to make sure everything is looking good and ready for people to have a fun hike out on the pathway. There were teachers, parents, and a lot of sixth-grade students helping out. Every student pitched in to help, and the teachers told the forest rangers what work they couldn’t handle. The students were able to clip large, overhanging branches, and pick up rubbish along the huge trail. Some of them found pretty weird stuff! The trail was very dusty, and there were rusty rocks and twigs everywhere, but everyone picked them up and made sure that the trail was clear and heathy. You also could see the beautiful reservoir in the distant. It was a long and hard job, but the sixth graders pulled through to clean up the environment. The sixth grade couldn’t have done it without the help of the awesome Marion Horna from Weber Pathways, who taught us a lot about the trail. He helped the students with some tips for hiking, and he kept the group under control. The weather was great for the work outing—very warm with a slight breeze and a tint of moisture. The students were told to bring gloves to pick up garbage, and a water bottle in case they got thirsty. Then, after the trail was clean again, the students were rewarded with Otter Pops for their hard work. In the end, the students were glad they went on the pathway, and they say they are excited to go again sometime. Sixth-Graders Enjoy Hike on Pineview West Trail By Halle Colquitt and Kate Southwick, Sixth-grade student reporters On September 5, the entire 6th grade had the opportunity to hike the Pineview West Trail, pick up the trash, and make it a better place! We have adopted this trail, and this was our first inspection. We had many wonderful volunteers. First, we scanned the Windsurfer parking lot for broken rails, unkempt bathrooms, and picked up all the trash. Then we all walked down to the beginning of the trail where we were escorted by Mr. Marion Horna, then headed down the trail. Our job was to write down things that needed fixing, like bridge problems, washouts, and big limbs that needed to be removed. But we were to do what we could along the way, too. As we were walking, all the 6th graders picked up a lot of trash. Annika Berg said, “It was fun, but I think people should stop littering.” We agree entirely. It is sad to think this lovely nature hike could be ruined by people who are too lazy to take their garbage to the trash. Bliss Vandeventer stated, “I thought it was really cool and fun that we could help out, but I also thought it was really long and tiring.” Avery Ward agreed. She said, “It was very hot.” It was hot, but it was also beautiful. Emma McKay says, “I thought it was fun because we got otter pops and I got to talk to my friends the whole time!” It was fun that we were able to go with the whole 6th grade and be with our friends. As we walked down the trail, we picked up a lot of trash, fixed some of the holes in the rails and bridges, and cut branches that hung too low. We also had some wonderful parent volunteers. Some of the many volunteers were Jeri Helland, Nikki Wolthuis, and Michelle Rosskelley. They were very helpful and kept the 6th grade under control. There were many other volunteers as well. After we made it to the roundabout, Mr. Hales surprised us with otter pops! We paused on our hike to enjoy our treat. After a while, we walked back to the school. When we got back, we were all tired but it was worth it. In conclusion, we are proud of what we were able to accomplish. Hopefully, the pathway will stay clean and beautiful. It was fun to help out, and I hope lots of people will be able to go through and enjoy the pathway. I hope the 6th graders will be able to go again soon! FOR RENT! LEASE to OWN or PURCHASE!
