The school is located at 3362 N. 5100 E. Shawnee Green Jenkins was raised in Eden and says she loved growing up in this rural community. There has been a lot of new growth over the years but Shawnee says she is still grateful to have the opportunity of living in Eden with her husband Austin. Shawnee states that she has always had a love for children, and grew up babysitting for many families in the Valley with her sisters. “In the fourth grade, I had an amazing teacher, Carolyn Olsen, who gave the students her undivided attention and all the extra help they needed in order to succeed. It was then that I decided I wanted to become a teacher when I grew up.” In high school, Shawnee was involved in a program through McKay Dee Hospital called the High School Elementary Leadership Program where she was able to spend several hours a day, four days a week, helping to teach the health curriculum to students as well as playing with and tutoring children. While taking classes at Weber State University, she found she loved working with younger children and changed her major from Elementary Education to Early Childhood. She did her student teaching in the spring of 2008 and has been working at the Melba S. Lehner Childrens School at Weber State as a teacher ever since. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood, and says she would love to continue her education in the future. The curriculum at Pineview Preschool is not only academic, it is based on incorporating the developing child as a whole through social, moral, physical, cognitive as well as language and literacy development. The School’s main goals are: 1. Children’s self concepts will grow and develop as their creativity, literacy skills, and problem solving skills will grow and be enhanced through learning experiences. 2. Children will learn a sense of community and responsibility towards themselves as well as others. 3. A healthy growth throughout all developmental areas will be encouraged according to developmental patterns, cultural context, and individual needs. Shawnee believes in the importance of teaching what is developmentally appropriate to children, and says that she gears activities and lesson plans towards individual children and their needs as well as the class as a community. She states, “Play is a huge part of children’s learning and development, and children should be able to make decisions and develop problems solving skills. Pineview Preschool encompasses the whole child in this most critical time in their lives. “It is important for children to learn at an early age that learning is fun. A child’s curiosity and love of discovery should only be enhanced and not hindered, especially at this great age when everything is exciting and new.” Shawnee also states that is grateful to have the opportunity to work with children and to be able to “play” everyday. “I truly understand the statement by Confucius, ‘Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.’” For more information, contact Shawnee at (801) 782-3018 or (801) 690-6730, or email her at <asjenkins@live.com> You can also visit <www.pineviewpreschool-asjenks. blogspot.com> Announcements Obituaries William (Bill) Wendell Holmes Our loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and friend, William “Bill” Wendell Holmes, 74, passed away April 2, 2009 William Holmes Thursday, at the University of Utah Medical Center from Pulmonary Fibrosis.
