Intersection of Highway 39 & Snowbasin Road — Volume XIII Issue X 1, 2006 Ogden Valley’s Healthy Lifestyle Program Three Valley residents are excited to offer Ogden Valley’s first-ever Healthy Lifestyle Program at the Red Moose Lodge. This 6week course will be a fun, interactive, handson program that can help you reach your nutrition and exercise goals, whether for weight loss or to “fine tune” your diet and exercise routine. This unique course integrates whole-foods nutrition, a variety of exercises, behavior change, and group support. The step-by-step approach puts together a lifelong eating and fitness plan, including a personalized eating plan, established Haley Hayes, Katie Wewer, and Amy Cain activity goals, how to stock a healthy kitchen, create quick and easy menus, and plan for “eating on the run.” The three instructors for this class bring a variety of knowledge and experience to make this class informative and interesting. Wewer M.S., R.D. is a Registered Dietitian who works as an inpatient and outpatient dietitian at Ogden Regional Medical Center. She is also a co-instructor for the Wilderness Nutrition class at the University of Utah, and does nutrition counseling for an online corporate wellness company called Fit Advisor. Katie graduated from the University of Utah with her Master’s Degree in Food and Nutrition in 2003 and has a B.S. in Dietetics from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. As a dietetic intern, she planned and prepared dinners for the US Olympic Speedskating team during the 2002 Olympics and was a nutrition consultant for the NOLS Cookery, a very popular backcountry cookbook. Katie loves backcountry skiing, backpacking, and long distance running. In addition, she recently began competing in triathlons. She specializes in whole food nutrition for disease prevention, healthy eating, sports, and wilderness nutrition. She enjoys working with people to make simple, maintainable changes in their diet and lifestyle. Amy Cain, M.S., R.D., is also a Registered Dietitian and offers nutrition counseling at Ogden Clinic. Amy received her Bachelor’s degree in nutrition from Washington State’s Bastyr University. As one of the world’s leading academic institutions for natural health sciences, Amy’s education at Bastyr emphasized a whole foods and natural health perspective that she utilizes in her counseling. Amy completed her Master’s degree in nutrition at the University of Utah. Her thesis on fish oil and an inherited form of macular degeneration was recently published iin the Archives of Ophthalmology. Amy views good eating habits as the “missing piece” in health and wellness. She feels that what we eat directly impacts our health. Her caring attitude and creativity teaches people practical ways to make lifestyle changes. Amy’s hobbies revolve around hanging out with her little ones, cooking wholesome foods, and any outdoor adventure. Haley Hayes, AFFA, RYT, is a personal trainer and registered yoga teacher. She received her certification as a personal trainer in 2003 through the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America. She has taught fitness classes throughout Utah County and enjoys designing workouts for individuals. Haley first discovered yoga as a freshman at the University of Utah. After 12 years of studying ballet, yoga—with its body awareness and mind engagement—was the perfect next step. Since then, she has come to truly appreciate all the health benefits that yoga has to offer prompting her to become a yoga instructor. In 2002, Haley began training in Salt Lake City to become a registered yoga teacher with the Baptiste Power Method by D’ana Baptiste. In 2005, she completed this 200-hour certification with the Yoga Alliance. Her certification also involved training with Gretchen Day (Beryl Bender Birch, Power Yoga), in the primary series of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, and with Jo Canfield of Yoga Jo’s in North Ogden. She has also attended many workshops with wellknown yoga instructors like Baron Baptiste, Celeste Keele, Scott Moore, and Ana Forrest. This winter she took classes from The Jivamukti Yoga Center and Sonic Yoga— both located in New York City. Haley currently teaches a Power Yoga class in Huntsville. Although there are many forms of yoga, Haley feels that she really sees results in her students through Power Yoga. along with her husband and two children, moved to Eden in December of 2004. She has a great love for adventure and travel. And although she has ice climbed in Switzerland, scuba dived in Honduras, and ridden a train through Russia, Eden is, by far, her favorite destination and motherhood her greatest adventure. 6-week Healthy Lifestyle Program will meet Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. from March 22 to April 26. Each class will last approximately two hours, and will include one hour of nutrition education and one hour of exercise. Exercise sessions may be held outside, weather permitting.
