Roy Stoker, who worked for the Forest Gene Rawlings Service, knew about small building that sat up at the Monte Cristo Guard Station. The building had been constructed around 1926. One night while playing cards Mr. Stoker mentioned the possibility of obtaining the building. They all volunteered to help pay for the building and help him move it down from the mountain. They put it behind Roy Stoker’s house, which was directly across from the Shooting Star Tavern. With much care and a little paint, it became home to the “Jolly Boys,” where they had a new place to play poker. Most nights they played with poker chips, but on occasion they would play with real money. The Weber County Sheriff Department heard rumors about the Jolly Boys’ card playing. The officers were going to try to surprise them and catch them with money on the table. But the Jolly Boys were too smart for them. They never got caught. They used the building for their poker nights up until the 1960’s. : my “As life on gj remember the good times spent in this little building. If you had a nickname, that meant you were liked and accepted. Of the original Jolly Boys, only Gene Rawlings is still alive. Leon Fielding, who sometimes filled in as a substitute card player, remembers, “Not only did they love to play cards, but they played to win. Friendship ended when they sat down to the table. Playing cards came first.” If there was a family outing they often missed it for card night. If they absolutely could not make it, they asked Don Stoker, Leon Fielding, or Jack Stoker to take their place. Some time later, the group decided that instead of meeting at the Shooting Star, they would take turns going to each other’s homes on Friday night. They would gather around E.
