Reflex tears are produced in response to sudden irritation (smoke, onions, for- eign particles), injury or emotion. Ironically, the irritation from dry eyes can trigger reflex tears, which flood the eye. But because reflex tears do not have proper lubricating composition, the discomfort persists. As the name suggests, the device occludes fne punctum, or tear duct, which is the drainage duct that carries tears away from the surface of the eye. There are upper and lower drainage ducts. Blocking some of these ducts prevents tears from draining away too quickly. Punctal occlusion can be compared to putting a stopper in a sink drain. This widely performed procedure is now safe, quick, painless, and totally reversible. I have to add my two cents as I agree that their actions are absurd. They should be eternally grateful fur the many houis and all the concern shown by so many of the tireless volunteeis. I think they should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves for the action they have chosen to take. An sy mpathy I felt for them, and I did indeed, feel sympathetic, has gone out the window now. It also makes me wonder what kind of an attorney would try to make a case for them. Pei haps the Christmas spirit will lead them to have a change of heart like Scrooge in the Christmas Carol did. You know, I love December and the holiday spirit that abounds but I still think September is the best month of the year. Why? It's too late to answer the notes in the stack of last year's Christmas cards and loo early to worry about getting this year's started. Maybe this year I will do better 'cause I've already written my letter to Santa. Little Johnny didn't have to send a letter. Alter saying his usual bedtime prayers, he was heard bawling out: Dear God. I pray that I will get a new bicycle for Christmas if it isn't too much!
