This team took first place honors in the Junior Jazz league at North Summit and want to thank their coach. Saturday, March 18. ten North Summit Middle School students went to a mock trial in the Scott Matheson Building. They competed against Bear River Middle School. The students did very well considering that the Bear River students were ninth grad, and they came from a bigger school. Despite those obstacles, North Summit still won. This was a setup mock case. It was about a disturbed teenager, named Cassidy Conner, that came to school one day, and threw a Moltou Cocktail into the lunch room. Raton Taylor, another student; then tried to run out of the lunch room and a Mock Trial Conner shot him pointblank in the back with a shot gun. Conner was tried and convicted as an adult. Now the parents of Taylor are suing the parents of Conner. They are trying to say that Conner's parents should have noticed the sign's of depression and got Cassidy some help. Our job, as the prosecution, was to convince the judge, and the jury, to find the Conner parents guilty of negligence, and failing to observe team with the most points that wins. We found out that there was quite a bit of evidence for the prosecution such as the Conner's getting a divorce physical abuse, and lack of Cassidys problems. Unfortunately, for us, this trial is set up for the defense to win. But, regardless of the decision, it is the supervision. There was always lots of fighting and yelling going on and the patents were rarely home. The parents both worked long hours, and they got home late. The kids were always doing everything for themselves. This was our first year, and we would like to thank Bishop Sheldon Smith, and Natalie Hansen for helping us so much. Raptors are birds that include eagles, hawks, osprey, falcons, and owls. All raptors catch and eat their prey. Most raptors catch there pray from soaring above searching for something to eat, and then killing them with their feet. Osprey uses a little different method to catch their food. The osprey dives underwater to catch fish. It uses it wings two swim underwater. Some wings can be as long as four feet long. The people at Hawkwatch set up traps to catch the raptors and tag them. By tagging raptors they can monitor how the raptors adapt to the covirotunentAll raptors have many different characteristics like if you made a big horn owl the size of an adult person there eyes would be as Case Closed Student Writer: Bryce Gardner The North Summit High School Government and Law class prepared for their very first mock trial of the year. To big as a softball. That tells how good their eyes would be. Also all raptors can turn their heads almost all three hundred sixty degrees around. Owls can him there heads the farthest way around, it is two hundred seventy degrees. AH of the other raptors can only turn their head-twhundred thirty degrees o around. To figure out which raptor is female and which one is male you can either look at the color of the wings or look at the size of the bird all female birds are bigger than males. One of the leading cause of raptors deaths is because there wings are so wide that they touch two wires at the same time and get electrocuted. Many people think if you have a raptor feather you could have killed a raptor, and that is illegal. It is illegal to keep raptor feather without a permit! So if you have a raptor feather and want to keep it get a permit. We really enjoyed the people from Hawkwatch for .coming to North Summit and giving us this assembly. . Softball Has a Great Start Student Writers: Julie Hewson and Sarah Searie The Lady Braves were against the Wasatch Lady Wasps for their first game of the season. The Varsity team performed very well, but they were a little nervous considering Wasatch had already played about five games, and it was North Summit's first. Even though the Lady Braves lost, the game was only practice and we hope they will do better when the season starts. The JV team did a little better and gave the Wasps a pretty close game. In (he end the Wasps came out ahead but only by a few points. After the Lady Braves had worked out their first game jitters, they were ready to take on the 3A team of the Morgan Trojans. It was a perfect day for a softball game. The Varsity Lady Braves played well in the field, but they had a hard time getting the bau around. They took a tough loss to the Lady Trojans. The JV played exceptionally well and scored a loL They certainly gave the Trojans a run for their money. The final score was 12 to 8 in favor of North Summit We all hope the Lady Braves can work harder and take a victory against the South Summit Wildcats this Friday, March 24.
