One in two adults diet and children as young as 6 or 7 are keying into weight anxi- ety and following suit. An esti- mated eight million people in the United States have some form of eating disorder. What is causing this? There are concerns that nutn- and other professionals have been giving such specific information on eating rules that is losing sight of the big At the same time, the media has portrayed the ideal body as a very slim, usually image. There is underweight often tremendous pressure put on children, especially young girls. by peers, mothers and others to prevent weight gain. These and other factors can contribute to eating disorders. There are no quick or easy solutions for eating disorders but, according to information from the Eating Disorders Orga- nization, there are things parents can do to give children stive attitudes toward eating and their bodies that may help prevent eating disorders. Consider these points. - Avoid conveying the attitude about yourself or your child that "I will like you more if you lose weight, cat less, wear a smaller size or eat only 'good' foods." Avoid negative statements about your own body and your own eating. - Educate yourself and your children about the genetic differences in body shape and weight and the nature and ugliness of those who prejudice toward aren't "thin." Be certain your child understands that weight gain is a normal and necessary part of development, especially during puberty. - Take people, especially females, seriously for what they say, feel and do. not for how they look. Scrutinize your child's school for posters, books or contests that endorse the cultural ideal of thinness.
