Rappaport This year, Salt Lake City and Utah taxpayers can give tax dollars directly to oil baron Earl Holding, rather than funnelling the money through city, state and federal agencies. In what amounts to a clever meeting of the minds between Salt Lake City Mayor Deedee Corradini, City Council Chairman Keith Christensen and folks like Sen. Orrin Hatch and Rep. Jim Hansen, taxpayers can check a box on individual tax returns designating money go directly to the billionaire. “It’s quite similar to checking the box on your state form to go to nongame wildlife or to the homeless,” said the mayors spokesman, Thom Dillpickle. As he explained it, the mayor and city council, as well as Hatch and Hansen “were getting sick and tired” of people complaining about government giveaways to Holding, who owns Sinclair Oil, Littke America and Sun Valley, to name but a few. The in 1995 problems, when apparently, Hatch and began Hansen decided to give 1,320 acres of land at the Snowbasin ski resort to Holding. The oil baron wants to turn Snowbasin into the next Deer Valley, but was unable to get the pesky US Forest Service to give him the land. Hatch and Hansen now have bills pending before Congress that would make the land Holding’s by an act of Congress. But their proposal only led to whining by environmentalists and critics who thought the deal was unfair, a spokesman for Sen. Hatch said. “So we figured, hey, we'll just put a checkoff on the 1040 form and taxpayers can just give him all the money. they want.” Although the proposal to give Holding federal tax money directly may have hit a snag in the nation’s capital, things look brighter in Salt Lake City. In January, Salt Lake City Council Chairman Keith Christensen and Mayor Deedee Corradini decided that two blocks of the oil baron’s real estate downtown should be designated as “blighted,” so that Holding could receive tax money from the city’s redevelopment agency (RDA). But wouldn't you know it, right off the bat some people started whining about how the billionaire didn’t need any help from the taxpayers to devel- PAGE 1.4 op the blocks between 400 South to 600 South from State to Main Streets. The fact that Corradini and Christensen, received large campaign contributions and loans from Holding didn’t have anything to do with the decision to include the billionaire in on the RDA’s tax revenue, the mayor's spokesman Dillpickle explained. “This is not the Good Ol’ Boys network run amok,” Dillpickle said in an interview."“It just so happens that this is all legal and above board. The loans and contributions from Mr. Holding to Mr. Christensen and Mayor Corradini were just a coincidence.” But to alleviate the confusion,, Dillpickle said, Salt Lake City property taxpayers will be able to check a box on this year’s form designating that up to $1,000 per person go directly to Holding. “Tt’s like this,” said Dillpickle. “Mr. Holding is doing a lot for this city by developing the downtown area and making it part of his personal empire. So, we think it’s the least taxpayers can do to help him out a little.” The mayor and Mr. Christensen could not take questions directly, because they were unavailable, apparently tied up in an important at Mr. Holding’s hot tub. @ meeting |
