Herev i nice note to end my report with, this week. It seems that most of the Square dance world outside the Basin has learned of the fact that all the (iifl-cxchun- 454-349- ANSWER: It will kill you. or burn you. maime you and God only knows what else if you aren't respectful of its danger. Several years ago three men were killed when the black powder plant blew up. No one knows for sure what happened, there was not enough left of the plant to carry on a good investigation. The facts are simply that it is an explosive. Remember that and you will know that it is not a toy. When that is understood, then you can start to use it safely. Store black powder in containers that will not burn. Some black powder was packaged in plastic bags sealed in the carboard containers. It is obvious to see that fire would soon turn the area into a pile of trash - blackened trash. Most of the cans have been known to survive fire and not explode. The point is that the metal container is safer than in the plasticcardpaper container. If you really want to insure the greatest safety buy your powder in one pound cans THEN store them in a magazine made to government specifications. At home I use a 20 mm ammunition can as my magazine. In the shop I'm required by law to have a magazine made of 4 gauge steel, lined with a liner that is put together without nails. spark-proThe lid of the box is inset to fit the liner box exactly. The lid of the magazine is made from V inch steel that is flanged to 214 inches. The will is it wheels on that mounted allow to magazine be removed in the event of fire danger. At home, use the safest methods you can. ( I ) get a good surplus ammo can and keep it locked up. (2) Teach your children to not play with black powder. (3) Involve your family in the sport so that they can see that it has a purpose, but that it must be controlled. (4) Keep your magazine in a place that would not generally be involved in direct contact with flames if a fire should break out in your home. Another note of safety that might be worth mentioning is that you never load your muzzelloader DIRECTLY from your powder horn or flask. have a friend that lost his hand and eye because he decided to load from his flask, and it became a bomb when a spark ignited the powder. The BATF allows you to keep 50 lbs. of black powder in a proper magazine. If you have any questions about the specification of a "proper" magazine give me a call and I'll be glad to give you the information. QUESTION:. Is Pyrodex safer? ANSWER: No. not really. It killed the man who invented it. The glaze that is used on the granules supposedly cuts down on the charcoal dust, but it still is as dangersous as black powder. As one shooter summed it up "When you want it to go off, it never will. Then all of a sudden it goes off." Personally do not use or sell it. It is as corrosive as black powder, doesn't really keep your gun cleaner, and nothing I've ever read really convinced me that the ballistics are better. About the only advantage can see in it is that it can be stored on the shelf without having to take special precautions. I feel that is not safe practice and would highly suggest to those that do to consider .the possible consequences. Till next time - Keep your chin to the wind!
