Many definitive statements about politics and politicians have been written ever since the (wo entities, simultaneously, came into being. Some of the best (in fact, quite caustic) definitions about politics and politicians were spawned by Amhmse Bierce in his hook l lie Devil's Dictionary, published 191 I. Sounds like one ol llclvr Citys local cattlemen had a herd ol cattle grazing up east of llchcr and some ol his cows wandered onto forest Service land. Cnlorlunnicly, one of the forest Services Smokcy Bear hoys happened to see the errant cattle. Being the protector of the lorest. the forest Ranger located the cattleman and proceeded to explain to him llie need to keep his cattle oil' l ores! Service land. Hu-- In-ai- Alter all. il isn't open range. Il was forest Service land, 'llie cattle shouldn't have been grazing where they were gazing. The cattleman had a responsibility to contain those cows! The calileman. recognizing the error of his cattle and Ins ways, tried to explain to the fine forest fellow what had hapiH-tH-d-. Ya know, it started mil with a few head of cattle and a simple, controlled six bundled acre graze. Then, all ol a sudden, the wind came up and I knew it, 1 had an eight thousand acre graze on my hands." Needless to sav, this raised the higher lire ire of Smokcy the Bear, lie tailed to see any humor, not that any was intended. Apparently, at a loss for words and being mote than a bit licked nil at the cattleman, w ho delivered his lines quite deadpan, the ranger gave the cattleman the universally recognized middle finger salute, climhcd in his pick-em-utruck and screi-chi-out of sight.
