Show Opinion jOcice April 25. 2003 The Summit County Bee Page A2 Tell Me About It SAME OLD - SAME OLD BY I LON SIMIS1ER History is in the of process recording the now most lop-side- d battle ever fought on this planet. Although per- haps not the best way to draw a comparison, it docs, however, contain some resemblance to a football game. It's sort of like the visiting team kicks off, runs down the field, grabs the ball away from the home team, and e marches over the time after time after lime until the goal-lin- home-teagives up and runs for cover. And, casting aside (impos- sible, of course) all the pure viciousness and other horrors of war, that's about the way this Iraqi scuffle has gone. Probably, most everyone agrees that it's way loo early for any historical proof to be as to whether this is judged an error of major proportions, or fur-nisli- will, in fact, be ranked as what the folks Washington think-tantabbed it, officially as . . . an action to free the Iraqi people," k billion per year until done). Simple arithmetic tells us that human-sufrer-in- even though SIS billion is a husky chunk, it still doesn't cut it because Saddam reportedly has most of (he geetus and squirreled it away in secret accounts all over the planet. And that doesn't include the gullions he on personally spent Presidential palaces, antique cars, women, etc., you name it. The estimated tally of his squirreled-awa- y money has been pegged at various amounts from $2 billion to $2(X) billion! Quite a gap - as the estimates speak for them- selves. Conclusion: Nobody really knows. One very obvious fact emerges, however. Pact: Saddam was a complete failure at battle strategy. Pact II: Mis greed at robbing the treasury for his own wealth is undoubtedly the reason why he couldn't finance better weaponry to use against America's visiting team. Most experts agree, also, that Saddam's fixation on his desire for Weapons of Mass most certainly Destruction devoured a huge amount of money. And even though these WMD'i remain hidden some- and. therefore, prove irrevocably that it was indeed warranted and necesItitaily a sity. One major point of contention, however - an argument, in my where, they are. nevertheless, in existence according to our country's experts on (he matter. It is their opinion that because of Sad Muss's total fixation for WMD's, debated virtually forever - is the old saw, . . it's not about oil." Well, at least one source has made a very solidly-base- d argument about that. A group of economists have slated that the annual production of Iraqi oil (normal operation - which it has never been Consequently - coupled together with his years of amassing a personal fortune - he had no money left which would have paid for the war games his fancy loot-wor- k was supposed to avoid. Now that the true facts about Iraqi's 'citlsie deals' with Prance, Russia, and Germany are finally surfacing (noting that their combined collusionary, ethical lapses are of htilliance), it is opinion at least, that may he since French management alter the Gulf War) produces about SIS billion in sales yearly. (Note: It is estimated that rebuilding Iraq will cost about $20 vehement opposition was all about g money, forget the torSaddam's exacted tule by crimes hideous turous, against the hooks of In the Iraqi citi.enry. the aforementioned nations, the evidence is slowly piling up. It appears to be, in fact, all about money. And oil. of course, is real money to those who formed this protective cadre. Chirac. Putin. Schroeder - leaders of the three ahovcmenlioned nations - seem to have colluded with Kofi Annan (U.N. Secretary General) in offering a plan for the role Iraqi oil will play in its ow n future. Due to the fact that Iraqi oil deposits arc second only to Saudi Arabia, there it led to his lack of attention towards conventional weaponry. arises the fact that Iraq could lower the price of oil by supplying an increase in volume, causing Saudia Arabia (and other oil sources to comply with pricing) thus lowering world petroleum prices (especially U.S. prices). That fact alone is probably the main reason Prance. Russia and Iraq, because all three of their email serhas vice been filled daily with interesting facts tidbits and of information concerning the war. The other night I had a restless night of sleep and woke the next morning with an irritable neck from sleeping weird. On my came a string of photos showing our military personnel out in the Held as they tried to rest. One caption showed a man covered from head to toe, including his face that was covered with a mesh type of material. In the background the wind was blowing and dust was Hying through the air so had all you could make out was his silhouette. He was silting with his back against the tire on a piece of military equipment trying to rest. 1 he second caption showed men laying on the ground with their boots off, their heads covered and the sun healing down on them. Yet another photo showed men laying or sitting in holes they had dug out of the desert sand and the last showed a muddy landscape with a group of men sitting or trying to sleep inside a poorly fashioned open topped "hut" they had built of mud and mcks. They were wearing their warmest attire in an effort to keep warm. Moral of the story? My neck didn't hurt anymore and I realized once again that no matter our problems or station in life there is always someone worse off. Being grateful isn't easy sometimes, but it is (lie path we should take. Yet another piece of information came in the form of an email stating the reasons behind the folding of tlie flag. It read as follows. Do you know at military funerals the 21 gun salute stands for the sum of the numbers in the year 1776? And have you noticed the honor guard pays meticulous attention to the folding of the Hag? They quit" leaching the informa fold-mad- ILOOOGO OS) uUt: countries are owed billions of $S$ due to their pre-wcontracts with Iraq, fearing that a drop in oil prices would translate to a much National Volunteer Week 2003 ( April 3) longer wailing period for their payments to arrive l if cvcrl they acted accordingly. The fad that this type of collusiun apparently exists in an organization of nations charged with world-wid- e steward ship responsibility weighs heavily against the credibility (read: future effectiveness of the United Nations) and is undeniably inexcusable. There is no better lime than National Volunteer Week to show appreciation for these very special people.
