Show L: t September 18, 1998 !; ; . I What a Season at The Utah Shakespearean Festival The curtains are drawn. The lights are dimmed. The acton have left the stages. The 1998 season of the Utah Shakespearean Festival is officially over - and, oh, what a season it was. The summer season saw a record number of critical acclaim from far and wide, and great successes in some "unexthirty-seven- th play-goer- pected places.' The Festival plays hosted 133,979 total playgoers this year, up from 132,044 last year, for an increase of 21,933. Those numbers are phenomenal and represent the largest season and the largest increase from one season to the next in the history of the Festival "Fart of that increase can be attributed to additional performances this year, said Donna Law, marketing and public relations director. "We added three days to the overall season, and eight lap Saturday night performances of Jpseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. In bet, she continued, 4he hugely popular "Joseph accounted for 23 percent of our total revenue this year. It is also interesting to note, said Phillips and Law, that the Festival theatres were filled to 84.7 percent, in increase of nearly 10 percent over last year. Of course, such an increase also means that die Festivals cash flow has improved. Income from ticket sales this year was $3,571,197. That is an increase of $673,392 from last year. However, most of that money is earmarked for a stabilization fund. We need to have a million dollars in a rainy .day fund, and this will complete that goal, added Phillips. "Now we can start focusing on a capital campaign to build the new Center for the Performing Arts we have envisioned for many yearsJt The Festival also saw more critical acclaim than ever before. For instance, its touring production of Romeo and Juliet was on the road for ten weeks, playing venues from Tucson to Salt Vdley City to Monument Mley, well as many locations in between. "This adaptation of Romeo and u Juliet played to predominately high school audiences, said Phillips, but it is not childrens theatre. As a senator since 1974, Gam was in chaige of the NASA budget administration and had an opportunity to gather first-han- d information about how taxpayers money was being spent in the space program. He also saw a large numbeneber of technological spin-off- s fiting both industry and individuals, in areas ranging from communication systems, computer technology, modem materials and pharmaceutical products. Since completion of his duties as a senator and astronaut, Gam has tirelessly shared his knowledge and enthusiasm about the benefits of space exploration with youth, experts in various technological fields and the general public. He has talked to school children in addition to working with the Young Astronaut Council where Ju urges children to zero-gravi- ty h) take more physics and math classes and become science teachers. SLOC is active with several apace exploration experiments and opportunities. Last year, two graduates participated in a national summer research project sponsored by NASA and American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE). For one student, Dana Campbell, of American Fork, it resulted in a career. Earlier, SLCC professor Irina Nelson was selected to work with NASA to solve an problem and proposed a lithium battery experiment for an upcoming space shuttle mission. And just this past summer, SLCC physics students teamed up with NASA scientists and the U.S. Department of Energys Lawrence National Berkeley Laboratory in identifying Salt Lake Vhlleys urban hot and cool areas.
